Passion is a vital underpinning of any good artist. Brazilian born S. Guccione went to college and graduated with degrees in journalism and art in Sao Paulo.“At the age of 25 I moved to Rome, where I had the opportunity to meet the most wonderful artists and attend many workshops and classes where I learned to work with different styles and mediums. I learned a lot from my mentor Giorgio Michetti who passed away in 2019 at the age 105. I truly enjoy working with oils, and my favorite style is impressionism. Equestrian is the theme that really brings back wonderful memories of my childhood in Brazil where I rode as well and raised horses.”Her mentor was born in Viareggio, Italy, in 1912. At 17 he had his first exhibit. His works add up more than 2000 paintings which have been exhibited in Italy, Switzerland & Austria. The Italian artist who lived through two wars, one of them as a soldier, also suffered the loss of two wives. He met Pablo Picasso in Nice and has opened his art to other techniques such as painted pants and a car.

Provence Beauty by French Artist Dorie

Dominique Dorié was born in Versailles in 1958. At the age of sixteen he began working in the Louvre in a conservation capacity as a restorer of sculptures.Dorie enjoyed the opportunities his location presented him, most especially, the chance to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum. Although Dorié had little free time, he felt compelled to sketch. Nevertheless he had several small “exhibitions” of his own, by hanging his work in the evenings on the fences of the Church of St. Germain des Pres. 1977 marked the turning point for Dorié’s career. He won a scholarship offered by the city of Paris, which enabled Dominique Dorie to enroll in a night course in drawing. As his skills in that field improved, he developed a desire to use color and began to paint in oil. From 1974 on, Dorié had participated in a number of exhibitions in the towns surrounding Paris. He also had two one-man shows in Paris, and  Strasbourg. 

Castellon Paints New York City to Native Cuba

R. Castellon is now showing at Westport River Gallery. The Cuban-born Impressionist artist based in the US took his first steps referring to art from an early age. Completing his art education where he spent four years of effort and dedication which enabled him to overcome and achieve the bases of what would be the beginning of his career as an artist. In 2004 he graduated with satisfied results and won several awards for being a well integrated student of Fine Arts and best student in four years. Then he continued his studies and got his degree as “Instructor of art” without losing the link with the artistic endeavor by which he continued to participate in collective and personal exhibitions that provided his artistic recognition in Cuba, Spain and Denmark. Woodstock "Tweet Tweet" by Tom Everhart

The piece is titled, Tweet Tweet and features Woodstock singing. It was created at S2 Editions Atelier in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2000. French artist Jacques Eitel has a unique, soft style that evokes an enticing, almost Camelot feeling. Edges are soft, colors are soft, and the dreamy landscapes are almost playful. His oils on canvas are  inspired by the lush French landscape, the seaside, and buildings that seem tio have soft edges. Born in Paris in 1926, Eitel studied at L’Ecole de Beaux Arts in the studio of portrait and landscape painter Eugene Narbonne. Jacques Eitel has exhibited regularly throughout Europe and the Unioted States. His work has been included in the prestigious Salon d’Autumne and the Salon des Independants; he had his first solo show at the Galerie Raffy in 1957 and won the Prix de Montmartre. He also goes by the name Jacques Eitelwein. His paintings are in the collections of the French state, the City of Paris, and in numerous private worldwide collections. His work is also in the following museums: Musee de la Marine, Musee Etat Francais in Paris, Musee de St. Cyprien, Musee Chapelle Saint Colomban.

In 1965, he went to Paris to take economics classes, but wound up becoming a musician with Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour. HM Saffer was hired by Barclay Records as a producer and had several hits during the late 1960s During this time he also was chef/owner of two restaurants in Paris and later a third in Ibiza, Spain. However, all during this era he never stopped painting and exhibiting. He took classes at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and had exhibits in Paris and Brussels before returning to the U.S. in 1970. H.M. started his music career with Warner Brothers where he co-wrote the international hit song “Look What They Done To My Song Ma” recorded by pop star Melanie. While at Warner Brothers he painted a 40-foot mural in their Madison Ave. headquarters.

Lelia Pissarro (French, B. 1963), Oil on paper, signed lower right and dated 2005. Presented with a linen fillet. and framed in a carved and antiqued finished wood frame.. 7 1/4"H x 12"W. Framed: 17 1/4"H x 22"W Lelia was born in 1963, and has painted since age four, having been educated by her grandfather, Paulemile and her father, Claude Pissarro. Following an 18 month break from painting one simple image captured her imagination; a photograph taken in the 1950s by her grandfather, Paulemile Pissarro, of two houses on a road under snow in Clecy in Suisse Normandy, where Lelia had spent the first 11 years of her life. Lelia started to paint this scene over and over, exploring the almost endless possibilities of variation in color and light. It was not her intention to paint a series, but this is what it became. In contrast to the Impressionists who were mainly concerned with capturing one subject in changing atmospheres and lights, something that could only be achieved by painting outdoors, she has created all the variations of the one subject in her studio and through her own imagination. For this reason, she is adamant that there should be no unnecessary or pretentious comparison of the work in this exhibition with the many series painted by Monet or her great grandfather, Camille Pissarro.

Seaside Gouache by Paulemile Pissarro

Seaside original by French artist Paulémile Pissarro (1884-1972), Gouache landscape on paper, Matted in a gilt finished frame and glazed. 8 3/4"H x 11 3/4"W; Frame: 17 1/2"H x 20 1/2"W. Paulémile, Camille Pissarro's youngest son, was born in Eragn in 1884. He was bought up in the artistic environment of the family home there and, encouraged by his father, began drawing at an early age. His godfather was Claude Monet who became his teacher and close friend, particularly after Camille's death in 1903. In 1905, he exhibited at the  Salon des Independants  for the first time, showing an impressionist landscape entitled Bords de l'Epte á Eragny, and although his father had supported his desire to be an artist, his mother was eager for him to learn a more practical trade. In 1908, he put aside his artistic pursuits and worked as an automobile mechanic and test-driver, and then as a lace and textile designer, thus allowing him a little time to paint. While he was still working at the lace factory his brother Lucien, who lived in London, asked him to send over some watercolors, and the sale of these encouraged him to leave the factory and dedicate himself to painting.

Theatrical Reflections by France's Michel Guyon

Theatrics of the vibrant genre of entertainment art is embodied by the artistic works of French master artist Michel Guyon. In the late 1960s Guyon studied at the Beaux Art School in Nantes, France. With Guyon’s passion for music, opera and painting, the artist also gained experience in theatrical productions. He began creating theater set décor, costumes and posters. Working with Mr. Baty, Michel discovered the drawings of Paul Dauce and Joel Dabin. Guyon worked with them on theater set décor. In the 1970s, Guyon worked on the set décor of several lyrical spectacles, including Figaro, The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Carmen, Faust, & others. Michel Guyon also worked for the Jean Marais Festival and the Francais Huster Company, “les Treteaux de France” and various summer festivals around France. The artist created scenery for the Angers Opera House and began to paint on canvas. Guyon’s talent of set and costume design permeates his artistic works beautifully. The combination of a poetry of colors and his forceful touch create a unique sense of strength and vibrancy in his paintings.

Westport: Onion Center to Artists' Community

Shown here is a Saugatuck Shores in Westport CT by French artist Mo Gart. Colonists settled along the Saugatuck River as early as 1639. In 1780 George Washington visited the Marvin Tavern in Westport. Westport was officially incorporated as a town in 1835, with land taken from Fairfield, Weston, and Norwalk. For many decades after that, Westport was a prosperous agricultural community and distinguished itself as the nation’s leading onion-growing center. After the turn of the century, Westport gained the reputation as an artist & writers’ colony, and cultural center. It was the home of Norman Rockwell’s Famous Artists School, also the Famous Writers School. Although Westport still retains its cultural roots, the town is no longer an artist’s colony. Ukrainian born G'Ma's Painting to Mrs. Roosevelt

Liza was born in Nova Kraruka, Ukraine, and had six children with her husband before immigrating to the U.S. in 1905. One of those children was Arthur who along with his wife Anne went on to become important art collectors based in NYC. Another was with Mostly Mozart for many years, and his wife with the famous Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance studio. Liza began painting very late in life at 75 relieve the pains of arthritis in her fingers. Her use of bright colors and playful pastoral imagery garnered her many fans, including the owners of Gallery Sixty Two in NYC, where she had an exhibition in the early 1950s. Liza died in 1955 just shortly after a major highlight in her painting career; the opportunity to present former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (seen at left with the artist) one of her originals in person at the U.N. Ukrainian Artist Delights with Love, Beauty

Born in Ukraine in 1961, Andrei Protsouk painted from an early age and after HS was accepted into the renowned Lugansk State School of Fine Art, followed by a Masters in Fine Art from the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg, Russia. It was during this time he was taught by his dream professor Evsey Moiseenko, who was friends with Picasso & Chagall. In 1994 he moved to the US where his work became popular, showcased by galleries and attracting collectors from Coca-Cola to President George W Bush. He has embedded his use of lines into all art, his straight constructive use of line embodies his classical training in fine art in every way. The soul of his art is in his infatuation with human relationships, love and beauty. He believes the universal language in the world is love, and he embraces this in each painting playfully with unique colors, lines and textures not seen in any other contemporary artists work.

Grand View of the NYC Skyline by Schachter

NYC in August about 7 am by S. Schachter, considered among the top commercial artists in the country. It is estimated his art is in 1 of every 3 households in the US. Products labels, cereal boxes, Snoopy for Met Life, and even Fred Flintstone. This is a severely embellished giclee on canvas, 28x48. Schachter knew since childhood that he wanted to pursue art. His parents, however, insisted that he go to business school. Schachter attended Boston University where he received a business degree in 1982. Post grad, he traveled the world. He spent two years wearing a three-piece suit and working in the eyeglass business. His watershed moment occurred in France during a business meeting. Schachter had brought an unlikely companion along on his travels: his watercolors. “I was passing through the beautiful French countryside on my way to the meeting. I kept thinking about how I couldn’t wait to paint it after the meeting was over.”

At the age of twenty-four Dominique Dorie decided he needed surroundings with greater calm and quiet, so Dominique Dorie moved to a small village on the edge of the sea in Normandy where he has worked to improve his handling of both light and color. Eugenio's Reflections of a Vibrant New York City

Eugenio draws upon philosophy, history and literature for inspiration, and defines the mood and emotions of his work using color. Using oil paint, the Peruvian artist depicts urban scenes in a wistful Impressionist style. As a self-professed admirer of color, his compositions feature vivid hues and radiate with light, a reflection of the artist’s fascination with city life. He elects to paint people as blurred subjects who almost blend into the scenes around them. This stylistic choice, executed through his unique brush style, shows the harmony of millions of people living and working in the same space. His style shares similarities to the work of Impressionist Monet, but the artist leaves his own mark with his distinct color palette of fiery oranges and golden yellows. His mastery of contrast and movement in his paintings bring them to life, as if the viewer could step into the painting and explore the cities for themselves. His favorite city to portray is New York , a metropolis that captivates the artist due to its constant activity. Despite his love of urban life, the artist occasionally departs from his depictions of busy streets and instead re-imagines natural environments. Eugenio’s brightly-hued landscapes veer into the abstract, effectively using negative space and minimalism to conjure dreamlike scenes. This is 24x30 and an original oil on canvas.

Cafes Bonaparte and Le Petit Zinc by Mizerek

Shown at left is a 12x16 oi painting now available, entitled Eve At Le Petit Zinc by American artist Mizerek. At eright is Cafe Bonaparte. Known for his colorful, luminous seascapes and expressive brushwork, Mizerek paints on site, deriving inspiration from coastal locations as well as harbors throughout the world. A central theme throughout Mizerek’s work is his use of light. In Mizerek’s words, “Light alters the color of all objects and touches those nearby. It sets a mood and evokes emotion, which I strive to portray in my work. I often explore various methods to interpret the way I view nature. I prefer marine subjects because I enjoy the way water reflects the floating objects, as well as the sky and time of day. It mirrors shapes and intensifies light. I paint outdoors to capture the light first hand and bring out all its color and luminosity.” In 2016, one of Mizerek’s paintings was purchased by the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. In 2007, 2011, and 2016, Mizerek was chosen as Artist in Residence at the Museum Yvonne Jean-Haffen in Dinan, France, and three paintings were made part of their permanent museum collection. Selected to paint at the Forbes Colorado Ranch, he exhibited and was made part of the permanent collection at the Forbes Museum in New York.

Rural Reflections by American artist Mona

In 1970, he had his first exhibition of approximately thirty paintings in Rouen, a show that was highly praised by art critics. In addition to an annual show in Rouen, he as exhibited in Birdhouse, La Hare, La Rochelle, Osaka, and Quebec and in major Salons of Paris.

Woodstocks Getting Hitched by Tom Everhart

Going to Chicago! Seen here is Hitched by Tom Everhart. Everhart is the only artist with full creative rights to the "Peanuts" characters created by Charles Schulz (1922 –2000). In 1980 Tom graduated from the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University. He got a freelance job drawing renderings of Schulz's characters. Everhart began working with "Peanuts" imagery exclusively. In 1980, he was introduced to cartoonist Charles Schulz at Schulz's studios in Santa Rosa, Calif. A few weeks prior to their meeting, Everhart, having no education in cartooning, found himself involved in a freelance project that required him to draw and present Peanuts renderings to Schulz's studios. Preparing as he would the drawings and studies for his large-scale skeleton / nature related paintings; he blew up the cartoonist's strips on a 25-foot wall in his studio which eliminated the perimeter lines of the cartoon box, leaving only the marks of the cartoonist.

The Beauty of Colourful Country Barns by Zack

Country barns afoot in dramatic colors against a moody sky. This original is 24x36.  A fall-like hue embraces rustic and maybe forgotten New England and Northeast barns. The foundation of G. Zack’s artistic interests can be distilled down to his love of color. In the early days of his stained glass work, masterful use of color was central in his designs. From sparse, contemporary, Mondrian-style compositions to lush, figurative installations, color always took center stage. His love of color lead him to hot glass, which allowed him to blend colors in ways that flat, cold glass techniques could not. Zack’s current work with acrylics presents yet another opportunity for Zack to compose pieces rich with contrasts of light and dark, texture, pattern and mood. 

Jean Pierre Dubord's Impressions of Normandy

The delicate poetic strain in his paintings has been influenced by the Impressionists. There is a very personal touch as well, however, for as one critic remarked, "Dubord is guided solely by his heart and emotions." Westport River Gallery is pleased to offer his works. Jean Pierre Dubord was born in Rouen, France in l949. Although that city remains his favorite subject, he often paints the street scenes of Paris, the Normandy countryside, the beaches of Deauville and the vistas along the Seine. He infuses his work with the subtleties of light and color unique to each season and locale. Saffer's Reflective and Colourful Creations

Some say HM Saffer has a unique perspective of nature. When he looks at woods, he looks into the woods. He interprets nature with all his senses, and allows the viewer to see through new visual parameters. H.M. Saffer was born in Philadelphia in 1942. After graduating from Temple Univ. in 1965, he went to Paris to take economics classes, but wound up becoming a musician with Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour. He was hired by Barclay Records as a producer and had several hits during the late 1960s During this time he also was chef/owner of two restaurants in Paris and later a third in Ibiza, Spain. However, all during this era he never stopped painting and exhibiting. He took classes at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and had exhibits in Paris and Brussels before returning to the U.S. in 1970.

Woman in Search of Lost Time by Bechard

Madeleine Béchard was born in Quebec in 1928 and passed away in 2016. She taught at the Chanoine-Beaudet Institute in St-Pascal-de-Kamouras, she perfected her skills with the painter Pierre Labrecque de Charlevoix. She continued her training at the Montreal Fine Arts Workshop, and finally with Louis Desaultiers from 1991-96. Madeleine Béchard's works are characterized above all by the originality of the subject. Long, slender shapes insinuating elegant characters are accentuated by a vivid coloration. Her compositions created under the theme "Woman in Search of Lost Time" are particularly appreciated by connoisseurs. In addition to his repertoire, "Women and Music" is scenes where characters and instrumental forms intertwine to configure creative and unique compositions.

Colorful, Charming and Enticing Scapes

This colorful original is by a an artist who recently passed away. It is gallery wrapped and 40x30. The late Afremov was born in Vitebsk, Belarus is a Russian–Israeli modern impressionistic artist who worked mainly with a palette knife and oils. He developed his own unique technique and style which is unmistakable and cannot be confused with other artists. His subjects included international cities, historic pathways, canals, bright cityscapes and nighttime venues.

 

 

Bracing Against the Biting, Snowy & Windy NYC

The shadowy figures in this painting by Fritz Bachmeyr brace themselves against the biting wind of a snow storm as they traverse a street in Brooklyn, NY. The Manhattan Bridge looms in the background at the center of the composition before a whitewashed sky, its distinctive suspension cables and trusses obscured by the falling snow. Here, Bachmeyr's visible brushstrokes are reminiscent of the Impressionists. Fritz Renato Bachmeyr was born in 1944. Oil on board, it is initialed and inscribed lower left "F.B. Brooklyn" 10 x 20 inches. This is from the perspective of Washington Street around the Water Street intersection. Indeed, Bachmeyr often drew stylistic inspiration from the 19th century. He is known for his regional landscapes and portraits, as well as his classical and allegorical academic paintings. Bachmeyr was born in 1944 in Munich, Germany to Baroness Von Glockenbach and Friedrich Bachmeyr, whose Bavarian lineage can be traced back to the 16th century.

 

Poumelin's Cafe Magots and Cafe Flore in Paris

Fresh art by French artiist Poumelin have arrived at the Westport River Gallery. Both are 32x32 Like its neighbour Le Flore, the Café des Deux Magots has raised its ranks to become a Parisian legend. Situated directly on Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés, it offers an unrestricted view of one of the oldest religious buildings in the capital, the Abbaye de Saint-Germain. Since its creation in 1885, the brasserie has welcomed major artists: Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, André Breton and Simone de Beauvoir. Today, intellectuals, national and international celebrities mingle with tourists in a traditional ambiance and decor (waiters in black and white, red seats, mahogany tables, etc.). The inventor of the concept of a literary cafe, the Café des Deux Magots opens the literary award season every year with the Prix des deux Magots.

Furry Himalayan Charges Keep the Brothers Busy

Original oil paintings by Asian master Zheng are hard to find. His extraordinary works, portraying the heartland of Tibet, not only illustrate the beauty and simplicity of daily survival in a small village, but they create a vivacious mood that captures the intense emotions of the human experience. Born in Shanghai in 1957, Zheng studied at the Central Arts Institute in Beijing and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Since 1981 he has created over thirty books and was awarded major prizes. Reflections of Rings End Bridge in Darien CT

The lovely Rings End bridge in Darien, CT by Sergey Stepanenko, born in Russia in 1956. He graduated from Fine Art College in Frunze, Kyrgyzstan, receiving a Bachelors in Fine Art. This original oil is 24x36. In the US his murals and fine art works adorn some of the finest homes, as well as several Cruise Ships of Celebrity Cruise Line & Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. Some of his well-known clients include Keith Richards, the Kennedys, Ann Eisenhower and Princess Jahara. His paintings are in private collections in the USA, Russia, Ukraine, Greece, Serbia, India, Panama, Japan, Germany, France & Egypt. In 1930 the bridge was reconstructed of stone and is presently called Ring's End Bridge. Guyon's Flashy World of the French Cabaret

Two new originals on the way! Theatrics of the vibrant genre of entertainment art is embodied by the artistic works of French master artist Michel Guyon. In the late 1960s Guyon studied at the Beaux Art School in Nantes, France. With Guyon’s passion for music, opera and painting, the artist also gained experience in theatrical productions. He began creating theater set décor, costumes and posters. Working with Mr. Baty, Michel discovered the drawings of Paul Dauce and Joel Dabin. Guyon worked with them on theater set décor. In the 1970s, Guyon worked on the set décor of several lyrical spectacles, including Figaro, The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Carmen, Faust, & others. Michel Guyon also worked for the Jean Marais Festival and the Francais Huster Company, “les Treteaux de France” and various summer festivals around France. The artist created scenery for the Angers Opera House and began to paint on canvas. Guyon’s talent of set and costume design permeates his artistic works beautifully. The combination of a poetry of colors and his forceful touch create a unique sense of strength and vibrancy in his paintings.

 

 

Liberty in Reverse Glass Painting by Sue Bond

Sue Bond's subjects are Americana-style country paintings, seascapes, iconic NYC scenes and the Eiffel Tower. She learned the technique of painting on glass from her father, Milton Bond, who was one of the foremost reverse glass artists in the U.S.  "I was inspired, as a child, by the beauty of my dad's craft and am fortunate to be able to continue his legacy". She enjoys working with this medium and says the glass makes the colorful shades of paint uniquely vibrant.

A Connecticut native, Sue is also a published children's book illustrator for CT author Thomas Jacobson. Reverse glass painting is a rare, ancient art first practiced in Egypt in the 4th Century A.D. and is also traced back to 13th Century Venice and the Orient.  It became popular in the early 1800's and used in clock faces. The unique art form requires specialized skills as the artist must paint the design on the back of the glass for viewing from the front side. The painting is done in layers in which the up-close objects are painted first with the background painted last. Click for Others.
