Dramatic, Wispy and Colourful Swirls by J. Fatse

Blues, yellows, greens and reds often dominate the dramatic colorful streams of acrylic paint or poly resign that blends together to create a unique pattern. Westport: Onion Center to Artists' Community

Shown here is a Saugatuck Shores in Westport CT by French artist Mo Gart. Colonists settled along the Saugatuck River as early as 1639. In 1780 George Washington visited the Marvin Tavern in Westport. Westport was officially incorporated as a town in 1835, with land taken from Fairfield, Weston, and Norwalk. For many decades after that, Westport was a prosperous agricultural community and distinguished itself as the nation’s leading onion-growing center. After the turn of the century, Westport gained the reputation as an artist & writers’ colony, and cultural center. It was the home of Norman Rockwell’s Famous Artists School, also the Famous Writers School. Although Westport still retains its cultural roots, the town is no longer an artist’s colony. Inlets, Inviting Vistas, Nature's Beauty by Dorie

New oils have arrived by French master artist Dorie. He was born in Versailles in 1958. At the age of sixteen he began working in the Louvre in a conservation capacity as a restorer of sculptures. Dominique Dorie enjoyed the opportunities his location presented him, most especially, the chance to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum. Although Dominique Dorié had little free time, he felt compelled to sketch. Nevertheless he had several small “exhibitions” of his own, by hanging his work in the evenings on the fences of the Church of St. Germain des Pres. 1977 marked the turning point for Dominique Dorié’s career. Though Paris is the center of art in France, working there can be accompanied by many distractions. At the age of twenty-four Dominique Dorie decided he needed surroundings with greater calm and quiet, so Dominique Dorie moved to a small village on the edge of the sea in Normandy where he has worked to improve his handling of both light and color. The artist who hung his work on the fences surrounding the church of St. Germain des Pres has traveled a long distance.

Sunny Normandy Beach by Jean-Pierre Dubord

Lovely new art by JP Dubord of the Normandy area of France. Saffer's Reflective and Colourful Creations

Some say HM Saffer has a unique perspective of nature. When he looks at woods, he looks into the woods. He interprets nature with all his senses, and allows the viewer to see through new visual parameters. H.M. Saffer was born in Philadelphia in 1942. After graduating from Temple Univ. in 1965, he went to Paris to take economics classes, but wound up becoming a musician with Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour. He was hired by Barclay Records as a producer and had several hits during the late 1960s During this time he also was chef/owner of two restaurants in Paris and later a third in Ibiza, Spain. However, all during this era he never stopped painting and exhibiting. He took classes at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and had exhibits in Paris and Brussels before returning to the U.S. in 1970.

Liberty in Reverse Glass Painting by Sue Bond

Sue Bond's subjects are Americana-style country paintings, seascapes, iconic NYC scenes and the Eiffel Tower. She learned the technique of painting on glass from her father, Milton Bond, who was one of the foremost reverse glass artists in the U.S.  "I was inspired, as a child, by the beauty of my dad's craft and am fortunate to be able to continue his legacy". She enjoys working with this medium and says the glass makes the colorful shades of paint uniquely vibrant.

A Connecticut native, Sue is also a published children's book illustrator for CT author Thomas Jacobson. Reverse glass painting is a rare, ancient art first practiced in Egypt in the 4th Century A.D. and is also traced back to 13th Century Venice and the Orient.  It became popular in the early 1800's and used in clock faces. The unique art form requires specialized skills as the artist must paint the design on the back of the glass for viewing from the front side. The painting is done in layers in which the up-close objects are painted first with the background painted last. Click for Others.

Dorie's French Landscapes and Seascapes

   French master artist Dominique Dorie's artistic focus is Provence and its nuances. He is at home with fields of lavender and red poppies, to small inlets filled with sea grass and colorful boats. He often paints lighthouses, flowering apple trees, hilltop villages, and even relaxing, serene waterways. Like many French artists he also signs the back of the picture, notes its size in centimeters, and the subject. He won a scholarship offered by the city of Paris, which enabled Dorie to enroll in a night course for drawing. He was awarded the Prix du Salon in the latter exhibit; In 1984 & 1985 he exhibited in the prestigious Salon d'Automne; In 1986 he won the Medaille d'Or at an exhibition in Deauville; He has since become one of the most highly regarded painters of his time and is listed in the prestigious international Benezit Encyclopedia, 2000 Edition. Soft Art Genre of French Gold Medalist Zarou

Several signed lithos are available by Zarou. The well known French artist was born in Gassin (1930), a small village near Saint-Tropez. His childhood was surrounded with French Art Culture. Following the footsteps of his father, he made his first exhibition (and sale) at age 12. His career started with numerous individual exhibitions throughout France, including Cannes, Nice & Lyon. He exhibited in famous art galleries in Geneva, and Stockholm. He has also made illustrations for books. In 1971, the city of Paris awarded Zarou the Silver Medal for his distinguished work, and in 1980 he was honored with the highest award "the Gold Medal of Honor." He is Commander of the French Artists society order. Since 1976, he has the privilege to appear in the two main paintings directories of well known world Artists, the "Benezit" and the "Mayer."

The Thrill of the Competitive Regatta by Eugenio

Born in the city of Tacna in Peru, Eugenio is a very promising young Peruvian artist. Eugenio studied at the Beaux-Arts Superior School of Tacna, where he graduated with high honors in painting. He has also achieved superior studies at l’École des beaux-arts in Lima, Peru. He paints urban and seascapes scenes in which the people seem somewhat blurred. His compositions are filled with luminous touches of vivid color that reflect the artists’ fascination towards city life. There is a spectacular interaction between light and movement found in his paintings. He is under 30 and he has already participated in at least 30 exhibitions. He participated in prestigious salons such as The Municipalidad de Tacna, The embassy of the U.S and The Banco Continental Gallery. He also received 1st place at the urban mural contest of Tacna. Sun Dappled Greek Islands by France's Kerfily

Kerfily creates enticing images through bold palettes and captivating compositions. Born and raised in Normandy, he showed an early artistic talent demonstrating his ability to create compositions with a unique freshness. He was discovered at the age of 25 in the artistic headquarter of Montmartre, where he had his first exhibit at the prestigious Salon de Paris. Inspired by the Mediterranean, South of France, Corsica & Greece, his enthusiasm is evident in his windswept seascapes and sun-dappled villages. He has received a Silver and Gold Medal from France. His work is included in collections worldwide including Musee d'Art Modern de Bocham and the Grand Palais a Paris. Michel Ferran Original Landscapes & Florals

Shown at right is the newest original on the market by the late Michel Ferran, a French artist. The picture is 29x36. Born in 1943 close to Narbonne, Ferran, photographer and painter since childhood, decided in 1992 to open a workshop and consequently became a professional painter, primarily focusing on the landscapes of Provence. His painting evolved quickly to a purified stylization of the subjects and forms. Working the paste and the colors together, it carved its fabric of a pallet containing blue, ochres, yellows and reds, highlighting the light to create unique effects. His talent was noticed by collectors and publishers. His pictures were then collected across Europe, and the U.S. He passed away in 2003. At left is one additional original available,16x32

Imprisoning Light by French artist JP Dubord

New pictures are on the way by noted French artist JP Dubord. Dubord has his own original approach to paintings. His palette is rich in its tones, and is fresh and uplifting. His work is so highly regarded that he had been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. Dubord’s canvases reveal his own intense joy of life and his love of rhythms of nature are distinguished by a nuance use of color. The artist’s mastery of his secrets of imprisoning light on canvas and the very delicate poetic strain in his painting may be traced to the impressionist manner, but it bears a very personal touch as well. One critic remarked Dubord is guided solely by his heart and emotions.

Powerful and Enchanting California Coastline

Three new California coastline oils are now available at the Westport River Gallery by Nunez, each with powerful waves and enchanting sunsets. Nunez is an artistic painter who enjoys the vibrations of light, shade & color. Color means life and radiant plenitude in his paintings. He usually paints with oils, and sometimes acrylics because they allow him to use thick layers of paint and to leave traces of brush strokes. He likes to paint an unlimited range of topics that reflect his broad interests in art and life. The presence and methodical blending of light and shade are normally the leading factors in his paintings. The fascination of the effects of light on the painting subjects is what brought him to paint. For landscaping, he does a lot of plein air painting. He does smaller paintings in the spot and then works from them if he wants a larger painting. Born in Mexico City, began painting at 13 and he studied Art and Philosophy in Spain, Italy and Mexico.

Colorful Original Umbrellas by Britain's Bigg

Umbrellas are back, thanks to British artist Roger Bigg. Making the choice between realism and abstraction.” From a very young age of 3 or 4 young Bigg began painting, and by age 6 he won a painting competition for the BBC. He spent many hours “in my own world of drawing and colour.” Bigg was creative director for several international advertising agencies, such as McCann's, WPP and Publis. At age 18 at the Canterbury College of Arts for Fine Arts, graphic design and architecture, he was fortunate to have paintings hung at the Royal Academy of Arts - London and Federation of British Artist – London.

CT-Born American Impressionist Rediscovered

A new upcoming exclusive exhibit at the Westport River Gallery depicts Will Hutchins’ personal vision of his travels throug the Northeast & Italy — from Little Deer Isle to the Venetian Lagoon. Born in 1878, in Colchester, CT, Hutchins was the only child of Charlotte Ann Hills & Rev. William Hutchins. A Yale Divinity grad and eloquent Congregational minister, he was respected as the foremost worldwide authority on the horticulture of the American sweet pea. Hutchins earned his BA at Yale in 1901 and the BFA in 1909, earning Phi Beta Kappa honors and class awards for his high-minded essays on art and spirituality. With a natural appeal to the footlights, he became a lifelong thespian. Acting, directing, and producing stage events, his papers include reams of original plays scripts of moralizing, episodic comedies, tragedies, and even a “medieval comedy." Click for other pictures.

Brooklyn Bridge Centennial in Reverse Glass Art

The 1983 Brooklyn Bridge Centennial by Milton Bond was created in 1984, in colorful reverse glass. SOLD. The late Bond is also part of major collections including the Grand Palais in Paris, the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of American Folk Art in NY, the Rousseau Museum in Paris and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Santa Barbara, Calif. Said The New York Times, "He entertained many careers, first helping his father, Capt. Ashabel Bond, who owned commercial sailing and oystering vessels. Then Bond sailed his own oyster boat for a year, and during the World War II worked as a tool maker for the largest munitions factory in the world, Remington Arms in Bridgeport. Following that, while employed by a real estate company, he drew inspiration from his older sister who was taking a class in reverse painting; and met with quick success. At right is Noah's Ark. Dr. Caudron's paintings are based on a perfect match between the diverse structures of motifs - through skies forcefully crushed to grounds which offer surprising perspectives - and, while the artist is wandering on the chromatic scale with enthralling boldness, there is nothing he dares not do. Such balance in his works allows the eye to travel nowhere else than on the painted surface and trace the detail of some knife-shaped pattern which clears the space for flat tints so that the eye is focused on what is of the essence. Seascape & Garden from France's JP Dubord

New oils are now available at the Westport River Gallery (Conn) from French Impressionist Jean-Pierre Dubord. He began to paint in 1967 and had his first exhibit in his native city in 1970. His landscapes evoke the moods of the four seasons in a particularly poetic manner. Showing in numerous exhibitions across France, he eventually exhibited in the prestigious Paris Salons: the Salon des Artistes Francais, and the Salon des Independents. Chillington's Plein Air Landscape Paintings

Landscape and still-life painter Chillington enjoys the diversity of nature. His plein air paintings explore the ever-changing environment. Layering oil paint thickly on the canvas with his palette knife, he records his perception and experience of a scene. Chillington has studied art at UConn, Silvermine School of Art and the Carving Studio (West Rutland, VT). "I was first inspired to paint after a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Impressionist galleries. Pissarro's New Art: Haystacks & Normandy

Shown here are two new original oils by famed artist Lelia Pissarro. Lelia has exhibited in many cities in France, as well as in Israel, Switzerland, New York, Boston, and London. Lelia has formed L'Atelier, a group of French artists who meet regularly to work together. For a short time, she also taught painting in Paris. Lelia Pissarro is the fourth generation of a family of artists. Her father is the artist H. Claude Pissarro and her grandfather was Paulemile Pissarro, the youngest son of the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. Leila’s early years were spent with her grandparents in Normandy and she exhibited her first painting at the age of eleven at La Jeune Peinture in Paris. She studied with her grandfather and her father and later went to art school in Tours. The legacy continues through Lelia whose oils and pastels show the richness of texture and brightness of color so typical of the Pissarro tradition. More info.

Although the city remains his favorite subject, he often paints the street scenes of Paris, the Normandy countryside, the beaches of Deauville and the vistas along the Seine. He infuses his work with the subtleties of light and color unique to each season and locale. A multitude of first place and gold medal awards have been won by Jean Pierre Dubord. Urban Landscapes from Spanish Cubist Malvehy

Eduardo Malvehy has received several awards such as the First Prize in Aix-en-Provence, and the Silver Medal in Evian and Arles. His paintings have been exhibited in Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany and the United States. Malvehy, born in Barcelona, has developed his style during his many years of travel throughout Europe, searching for the rich variety of the traditional architecture of villages unique to each region. Malvehy's favorite subject is urban landscapes, often with water as a backdrop, such as ports with colorful boats moored, or houses reflected on a river. He is fascinated with the warm colors of the Mediterranean countries as much as with the subtle grays of the North. With the artist's personal technique, including an increasing influence of Cubism, he renders the beauty and atmosphere of each place. Miss Liberty & the New WTC in Reverse Glass

New from American reverse glass artist Sue Bond is the Statue of Liberty overlooking the new World Trade Center buildings. "Although only 1-WTC is completed, I painted the others as they'll look based on the designs." The glass is 11x14, and framed. Bond is also a published children's book illustrator. Americana-style country scenes, seascapes, iconic New York scenes and the Eiffel Tower are included in the subject matter by reverse glass artist Sue Bond. She learned the technique of painting on glass from her late father, Milton Bond, who was one of the foremost reverse glass artists in the U.S. Milton worked in a mirror world in the fine detail of acrylic, ink, and metallic foil, giving a three dimensional luminosity to the exposed glass side when exhibited. Window into the French World by Dr. Courchia

French artist Jean-Paul Courchia just sent this unique composition, a window into a landscape and seascape. The physician-lecturer-artist’s oil paintings on canvas are displayed in Marseille in the famous Provencal Gallery Jouvène, which Van Gogh and Cezanne called home for their art work. Her Highness Queen Paola of Belgium and Madame Nobutaka Shinomiya, wife of the Consul of Japan in Marseille, are avid collectors of his work. He is also a medical doctor of endocrinology and metabolic diseases, and fascinated by science, art, medicine, perceptions, and light. Land-Seascape by Georges Yoldjoglou

Original oil by a heavily decorated French artist? One available, 21x25, (not incl. frame), by internationally known Georges Yoldjoglou. "Yold"  was born in Paris June 25, 1933. His work is colorful, light, flowing, almost wistful in its approach. His skies are dramatic, and land is full of life. 1956-90 he was artistic director at TOTAL, France Designer of stamps and posters. Other distinctions: 1992 - Laureat of the French government competition for the design of coins; 1993 - Winner of the Best Crown coin design, Winter Sport, Baltimore, USA; 1996 - Illustrated colette´s art book "Belles Saisons" with original colored lithographies edited by Pierre de Tartas, Paris; 1996 - Laureat of the French State Competition for the design of a symbolic motive for aircraft-carrier "Charles de Gaulle"; 2004 - Promoted by the French government to the rank of Chevalier dans l´Ordre des Arts & Letters.

Wondrous French Oils by Dominique Dorie

Two small oils by Dominique Dorie are now available. Beautifully framed, they are each 9x11 and in perfect shape. In 1985 Dominique Dorie exhibited his work in the Salon de Criel and in the Salon d'Orly. He was awarded the Prix du Salon in the latter exhibition;  In 1984 and 1985 he exhibited in the prestigious Salon d'Automne; In 1986 he won the Medaille d'Or at an exhibition in Deauville; He has since become one of the most highly regarded painters of his time and is listed in the prestigious Benezit Encylcopedia, 2000 Edition, and is featured on page 687.

 

Imaginative Impressions of Blustery Nature

Swirling, blustery winds and oceans blending into a feeling, a pattern, a powerful colorful display. Lex has transformed his impressions of nature into an imaginative experience in  oils and pastels. His painterly style incorporates distinctive brush strokes, finger painting, and mark making, accompanied by a  blending of color. His works began as pastels, and recently changed to working with longer-lating oil paints. An award-winning artist based in sunny Florida, though originally from the snowy-Albany, NY-area, he received the Grand Prize Award in the 67th Cooperstown (NY) National Juried Exhibition. His work has appeared in numerous international, national, & regional juried exhibitions.

Poumelin's Expression of Poetic Elements

French artist Richard Poumelin's art is expressed in his music as an accomplished guitarist. His landscapes, Venetian seascapes, still lifes, and his others are filled with a spiritual exercise. His works evoke a feeling, a sense of place, and sometimes the gold paint jumps out against the serene black and white. A silver medallist in 1996 at the Grand Salon Internationnal de Peinture, and the grand prize gold medalist in 1997 at the Internationnal d’Arts Plastiques Poumelin’s work are in a number of significant private and corporate collections. Huchet, Zarou French Lithographs Available

A variety of lithographs have come in to the Westport River Gallery from French artists including Urbain Huchet and Victor Zarou. Huchet was born in Rennes, France in 1930. After studying law and owning a textile factory for years, he decided in 1960 to devote himself to painting. He spent his first three years as an artist in Port-Aven, following in the footsteps of Gaugin and Emile Bernard, both of whom influenced him. Huchet is a master of Contemporary Impressionism. His paintings and lithos celebrate a wide spectrum of life ranging from delightful vignettes of the Parisian scene to the inspired beauty of dramatic seascapes and the French countryside. Many of his paintings express his love of the sea and the Brittany coast. After moving to Paris in 1963, his love of adventure and travel led him to spend time painting and writing in Europe, the Middle East and South America where he produced marvelous imagery capturing the essence of the lands and people. He made 14 trips of more than 4 months each, from Mexico to Brazil, via Peru, Central America and the Caribbean islands. A luxurious portfolio of lithos of Egypt shows his love of that country. His wonderful depictions of circus performers, musicians and everyday people were strongly influenced by his adventures and sojourns in foreign lands. Exhibitions of his work have been held throughout he world. Paris, however, is where the largest number of his works were produced. The artist who hung his work on the fences surrounding the church of St. Germain des Pres has traveled a long distance. In 1985 he exhibited his work in the Salon de Criel and in the Salon d'Orly. He was awarded the Prix du Salon in the latter exhibition. In 1984 and 1985 he exhibited in the prestigious Salon d'Automne. In 1986 he won the Medaille d'Or at an exhibition in Deauville. He has since become one of the most highly regarder painters of his time and is listed in the prestigious Benezit Encyclopedia, 2000 Edition, and is featured on page 687.

Nevertheless he had several small "exhibitions" of his own; by hanging his work in the evenings on the fences of the Church of St. Germain des Pres. 1977 marked the turning point for Dorié's career.

Scottish, English Seascapes by Stanley Andrews

Five oil paintings are now available by the late Stanley Andrews, who comes to the Westport River Gallery in Connecticut, from England. He had been a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists for many years. He had exhibited widely in the Midlands and South of England, including the Singer and Friedlander Watercolor Exhibition and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolor. He also taught many classes in painting, influencing the next generation of English painters.

Allen Shufflebotham

New works have arrived in the Westport River Gallery by British artist Allen Shufflebotham. He  was recognized as a talented artist when he was a schoolboy. Having left school he went into engineering but always remained focused on art. In 1967 he sustained a sporting injury that sidelined him from his employment. This gave him the time to pursue his interest in painting and from that time on, he has built up a reputation as an accomplished artist winning national prizes. Click for other works.

In 1985 Dorie exhibited his work in the Salon de Criel and in the Salon d'Orly. In 1986 Dominique Dorie won the Medaille d'Or at an exhibition in Deauville.
