Castellon Paints New York City to Native Cuba

R. Castellon is now showing at Westport River Gallery. The Cuban-born Impressionist artist based in the US took his first steps referring to art from an early age. Completing his art education where he spent four years of effort and dedication which enabled him to overcome and achieve the bases of what would be the beginning of his career as an artist. In 2004 he graduated with satisfied results and won several awards for being a well integrated student of Fine Arts and best student in four years. Then he continued his studies and got his degree as “Instructor of art” without losing the link with the artistic endeavor by which he continued to participate in collective and personal exhibitions that provided his artistic recognition in Cuba, Spain and Denmark. New NYC art now at Westport River Gallery by R. Castellon. The Westport River Gallery now has about 20 fresh works of art. The Cuban-born Impressionist artist based in the US took his first steps referring to art from an early age. New Cityscapes Capture the Vibrancy of the City

New original paintings by Eugenio. He draws upon philosophy, history and literature for inspiration, and defines the mood and emotions of his work using color. Using oil paint, Eugenio depicts urban scenes in a wistful Impressionist style. As a self-professed admirer of color, his compositions feature vivid hues and radiate with light, a reflection of the artist’s fascination with city life. Eugenio elects to paint people as blurred subjects who almost blend into the scenes around them. This stylistic choice, executed through his unique brush style, shows the harmony of millions of people living and working in the same space. Eugenio’s style shares similarities to the work of Impressionist Claude Monet, but the artist leaves his own mark with his distinct color palette of fiery oranges and golden yellows. Eugenio’s mastery of contrast and movement in his paintings bring them to life, as if the viewer could step into the painting and explore the cities for themselves. Grand View of the NYC Skyline by Schachter

NYC in August about 7 am by S. Schachter, considered among the top commercial artists in the country. It is estimated his art is in 1 of every 3 households in the US. Products labels, cereal boxes, Snoopy for Met Life, and even Fred Flintstone. This is a severely embellished giclee on canvas, 28x48. Schachter knew since childhood that he wanted to pursue art. His parents, however, insisted that he go to business school. Schachter attended Boston University where he received a business degree in 1982. Post grad, he traveled the world. He spent two years wearing a three-piece suit and working in the eyeglass business. His watershed moment occurred in France during a business meeting. Schachter had brought an unlikely companion along on his travels: his watercolors. “I was passing through the beautiful French countryside on my way to the meeting. I kept thinking about how I couldn’t wait to paint it after the meeting was over.”

Bracing Against the Biting, Snowy & Windy NYC

The shadowy figures in this painting by Fritz Bachmeyr brace themselves against the biting wind of a snow storm as they traverse a street in Brooklyn, NY. The Manhattan Bridge looms in the background at the center of the composition before a whitewashed sky, its distinctive suspension cables and trusses obscured by the falling snow. Here, Bachmeyr's visible brushstrokes are reminiscent of the Impressionists. Fritz Renato Bachmeyr was born in 1944. Oil on board, it is initialed and inscribed lower left "F.B. Brooklyn" 10 x 20 inches. This is from the perspective of Washington Street around the Water Street intersection. Indeed, Bachmeyr often drew stylistic inspiration from the 19th century. He is known for his regional landscapes and portraits, as well as his classical and allegorical academic paintings. Bachmeyr was born in 1944 in Munich, Germany to Baroness Von Glockenbach and Friedrich Bachmeyr, whose Bavarian lineage can be traced back to the 16th century.

 

Liberty in Reverse Glass Painting by Sue Bond

Sue Bond's subjects are Americana-style country paintings, seascapes, iconic NYC scenes and the Eiffel Tower. She learned the technique of painting on glass from her father, Milton Bond, who was one of the foremost reverse glass artists in the U.S.  "I was inspired, as a child, by the beauty of my dad's craft and am fortunate to be able to continue his legacy". She enjoys working with this medium and says the glass makes the colorful shades of paint uniquely vibrant.

A Connecticut native, Sue is also a published children's book illustrator for CT author Thomas Jacobson. Reverse glass painting is a rare, ancient art first practiced in Egypt in the 4th Century A.D. and is also traced back to 13th Century Venice and the Orient.  It became popular in the early 1800's and used in clock faces. The unique art form requires specialized skills as the artist must paint the design on the back of the glass for viewing from the front side. The painting is done in layers in which the up-close objects are painted first with the background painted last. Click for Others.

Autumn Colors Reflected in Olaf's Originals

Te lovely Angel of the Waters, at the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park NYC. Its among the largest fountains in NY, 26 feet by 96 wide. It was the only sculpture to have been commissioned as a part of Central Park's original design. This neoclassical sculpture features an 8-foot bronze angel who stands above four small cherubim representing health, purity, temperance and peace. The picture is 30x40, and oil on canvas. Angel of the Waters was designed by Emma Stebbins in 1868 and dedicated in 1873, at which point she became the first woman to receive commission for a major work of art in the city of NY. Central Park by the late Bogomir Bogdanovic

Originals by the late Bogomir Bogdanovic (1923-2011) consist of breathtaking landscapes dotted with brightly-clad people pursuing their daily activities. He was especially proud of his award winning canvases of NY’s Central Park and rural scenes in and about Warwick, NY, and neighboring Sussex County, NJ. I paint everything, he used to say, but not abstractions. He preferred his art to be recognizable; it's an amazing experience to watch a painting reveal itself, be it on paper or canvas. He very much enjoyed painting on location and rarely used photographs unless he had taken them himself. For several decades, he was a familiar sight, smoking his cigar and mixing his paints along the local highways and byways. Despite occasionally bad weather, he was known to endure many long hours in snow and ice waiting to capture his subject in just the right light. Insightful Works by Urban Landscapist J. Bye

From an early age, J. Bye he showed a talent for rendering still lives and landscapes. Because visual communication always interested him, he decided to pursue art after graduating high school. His medium is both oils and acrylics, depending on the image, style, and time. He entered the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) for his undergraduate studies, where he discovered his passion for the human figure. he spent a year in Rome, through RISD's European Honors Program where he studied classical art and architecture. After RISD, he continued with his graduate studies at the NY Academy of Figurative Art. His formal education exposed him further to the works of artists like Matisse, Bonnard and Lucian Freud, whose styles influence his work.

New York City through the Brushes of Eugenio

Born in the city of Tacna in Peru, Eugenio is a very promising young Peruvian artist. Eugenio Cohalia studied at the Beaux-Arts Superior School of Tacna, where he graduated with high honors in painting. He has also achieved superior studies at l’École des beaux-arts in Lima, Peru. He paints urban scenes in which the people within the painting seem somewhat blurred compared to the cityscape. Compositions are filled with luminous touches of vivid color that reflect the artists fascination towards city life. There is a spectacular interaction between light and movement found in his paintings. Cohalia is under 30 and has already participated in at least 30 exhibitions. Bye captures the elusive complexity many artists miss, from the decaying solo apartment bldg in Brooklyn, to the infrastructure of NYC's Queensboro Bridge, which sees over 180,000 cars day and at which the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises was filmed in part. The power and immensity are captured in a contrasting and beautiful blend of colors, reflection, movement and power. “The development of a work of art is what interests me most as an artist. Bond's Reverse Glass Art "Olde Train Winter"

Fresh on the market is an original reverse glass painting (right) by the late Folk Artist Milton Bond. For many years the noted artist lived in nearby Stratford, CT. Milton Bond's personal craft is the medium of reverse glass painting, working in a mirror world in the fine detail of acrylic, ink, and metallic foil, giving a three dimensional luminosity to the exposed glass side when exhibited. The medium was first introduced to him 32 years ago by his beloved sister Mildred, a lover of the arts. In the last 45 years, he has produced over 1,500 paintings, and been featured at the Museum of American Folk Art, NYC; the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, the Lyman Allyn Museum, New London; the Grand Palais, Paris; and the John Judkyn Museum of American Art, in Bath, England; and the NY State Historical Association, in Cooperstown, NY. Mysterious Gotham: Mobsters, Bridges, NYC

Westport River Gallery has several NYC (aka Gotham) originals for sale, including this one at right by US artist Zider. Gotham is a fictional US city appearing in comics by DC Comics, best known as the home of Batman. His residence was first identified as Gotham City in Batman #4 (1940). NY Times journalist William Safire described Gotham as "NY below 14th St, from SoHo to Greenwich Village, the Bowery, Little Italy, Chinatown, and the sinister areas around the base of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges." Batman artist Neal Adams sees the 1940s mobster history of Chicago as the basis for Gotham while writer/artist Frank Miller has stated that Metropolis is NY in the day and Gotham City is NY at night. Locations used as inspiration or filming for the urban portion of Gotham in the live-action Batman films have included NYC, LA, Chicago, Pittsburgh, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong. More information

Simple Countryside Scenes by Ted Jeremenko

Internationally collected folk artist Ted Jeremenko was born in Yugoslavia in 1938. At 12, Ted and his family moved to Philadelphia. In 1962, Ted moved to NYC, where he began a career in the banking and computer industries. While his job satisfied many of his interests, he felt the need to get involved in something creative. Combined with his interest in art and the visual beauty he discovered on his early visits to the eastern tip of Long Island, Ted began painting in the early 1970’s. “I try to use color to define light and form.”  From sunrises to sunsets, calm, clear moonlit evenings to foreboding skies, we respond on an emotional level to a moment captured in eternity. Three signed and numbered serigraphs are available, including these two.

Brooklyn Bridge Centennial in Reverse Glass Art

The 1983 Brooklyn Bridge Centennial by Milton Bond was created in 1984, in colorful reverse glass. SOLD. The late Bond is also part of major collections including the Grand Palais in Paris, the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of American Folk Art in NY, the Rousseau Museum in Paris and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Santa Barbara, Calif. Said The New York Times, "He entertained many careers, first helping his father, Capt. Ashabel Bond, who owned commercial sailing and oystering vessels. Then Bond sailed his own oyster boat for a year, and during the World War II worked as a tool maker for the largest munitions factory in the world, Remington Arms in Bridgeport. Following that, while employed by a real estate company, he drew inspiration from his older sister who was taking a class in reverse painting; and met with quick success. At right is Noah's Ark. The Empire State Building as seen through the fabled Brooklyn Bridge, in this black/gray & white original by Olaf. Central Park, the Jewel of New York City

Artist Wayne Shilson's latest works are of New York City's famed Central Park. At the a garden near the Conservatory, and at right the Boathouse area. He uses the time-consuming style of pointillism, the same painting style as George Seurat and Paul Signac. Shilson paints in acrylics, using tiny dots to bring an image alive. The award-winning artist, listed in International Biographical Centre Cambridge England, was named among the 2,000 Outstanding Artists and Designers of the 20th Century, and Who's Who in American Art. He was awarded an arts grant to paint and draw an updated version of the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro's urban landscape series in Paris.  Shown here are two among th series, both 16x20.

Miss Liberty & the New WTC in Reverse Glass

New from American reverse glass artist Sue Bond is the Statue of Liberty overlooking the new World Trade Center buildings. "Although only 1-WTC is completed, I painted the others as they'll look based on the designs." The glass is 11x14, and framed. Bond is also a published children's book illustrator. Westport Scenes by Folk Artists Bond, Jakobsen

Three lithographs featuring West[port CT, are available by known/listed American Folk Artists. Kathy Jakobsen is one of America's premier folk artists. (Main St at right). Her paintings are in permanent collections, including the Museum of American Folk Art & the Smithsonian. She also lived nearby in Weston. She didn't attend prestigious art schools, but started working in a factory making bumper stickers by day & painting by night. In the 1960s, Milton Bond began recording small oil scenes on the back of clear glass. He recorded bucolic rural scenes & busy urban vistas churning with activity. Working alone and without instruction, he mastered the technique. The late artists' style is semi-primitive, finely detailed, gaily colored, featuring rural New England scenes. One is the National Building (at left) that still stands at the gateway to Westport, back in 1873 on the Fourth of July. His work has won awards & was acquired by the Smithsonian , the Museum of American Folk Art, the Grand Palais and the Henri Rousseau Museum in Paris. See others my Milton and daughter Sue Bond.

Times Square Mosaics of Fragmented Colors

Kya Nam Han interprets Korean Modernism within Western context and vice versa—Western Modernism within Far Eastern cultural context. He uses traditional values and methodologies, such as perspective and chiaroscuro of the West, and Chun (passage and grid) from the East. He blends Eastern isometric perspective with traditional Western linear perspective painting to create a fusion of both depth and flatness, and then apply calligraphic principles to recreate new pictorial images. He mixes two cultural genes together. The images of the street include cars, buildings, lights, and the mosaics of fragmented color are masterfully demonstrated. He repeatedly superimposes and substitutes structures and images by overlapped lines of contours. The images, the whole drama of the surface come under the relationship of deconstruction resulted from the effective usage of grids. His work is in collections that include American Express Headquarters, NY; Supreme Court, Seoul, Korea; Samsung Corp., Seoul, Korea. This is one original at the Westport River Gallery, size 32x39.
