Dorie's French Landscapes and Seascapes

   French master artist Dominique Dorie's artistic focus is Provence and its nuances. He is at home with fields of lavender and red poppies, to small inlets filled with sea grass and colorful boats. He often paints lighthouses, flowering apple trees, hilltop villages, and even relaxing, serene waterways. Like many French artists he also signs the back of the picture, notes its size in centimeters, and the subject. He won a scholarship offered by the city of Paris, which enabled Dorie to enroll in a night course for drawing. He was awarded the Prix du Salon in the latter exhibit; In 1984 & 1985 he exhibited in the prestigious Salon d'Automne; In 1986 he won the Medaille d'Or at an exhibition in Deauville; He has since become one of the most highly regarded painters of his time and is listed in the prestigious international Benezit Encyclopedia, 2000 Edition. 19th Century Hudson River Four Seasons

The Four Seasons is soon available by a 19th Century Hudson River School (HRS) artist. The paintings  depict the American landscape as a pastoral setting, where human beings and nature coexist peacefully. HRS landscapes are characterized by their realistic, detailed, and sometimes idealized portrayal of nature, often juxtaposing peaceful agriculture and the remaining wilderness, fast disappearing from the Hudson Valley just as it was coming to be appreciated for its qualities of ruggedness and sublimity. They took as their inspiration such European masters as Claude Lorrain, John Constable and J.M.W. Turner, and shared a reverence for America's natural beauty with contemporary American writers such as Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Click for others.

Flamingos and Riverside Villages by Estivalet

New art is on the way to the Westport River Gallery from Elisabeth Estivalet in France. A native of Poland, Estivalet fell in love with Provence when she settled there in the late 1970's. Though Estivalet has degrees in both Economics and Philosophy, the countryside of Provence elicited from her a natural artistic talent, and she instinctively embarked on a passionate and lifelong career as an artist. Painting solely with a palette knife, Elisabeth Estivalet taught herself to master the techniques of color management, perspective and composition. See Pinterest for all works. Soft Art Genre of French Gold Medalist Zarou

Several signed lithos are available by Zarou. The well known French artist was born in Gassin (1930), a small village near Saint-Tropez. His childhood was surrounded with French Art Culture. Following the footsteps of his father, he made his first exhibition (and sale) at age 12. His career started with numerous individual exhibitions throughout France, including Cannes, Nice & Lyon. He exhibited in famous art galleries in Geneva, and Stockholm. He has also made illustrations for books. In 1971, the city of Paris awarded Zarou the Silver Medal for his distinguished work, and in 1980 he was honored with the highest award "the Gold Medal of Honor." He is Commander of the French Artists society order. Since 1976, he has the privilege to appear in the two main paintings directories of well known world Artists, the "Benezit" and the "Mayer."

The Thrill of the Competitive Regatta by Eugenio

Born in the city of Tacna in Peru, Eugenio is a very promising young Peruvian artist. Eugenio studied at the Beaux-Arts Superior School of Tacna, where he graduated with high honors in painting. He has also achieved superior studies at l’École des beaux-arts in Lima, Peru. He paints urban and seascapes scenes in which the people seem somewhat blurred. His compositions are filled with luminous touches of vivid color that reflect the artists’ fascination towards city life. There is a spectacular interaction between light and movement found in his paintings. He is under 30 and he has already participated in at least 30 exhibitions. He participated in prestigious salons such as The Municipalidad de Tacna, The embassy of the U.S and The Banco Continental Gallery. He also received 1st place at the urban mural contest of Tacna. Central Park by the late Bogomir Bogdanovic

Originals by the late Bogomir Bogdanovic (1923-2011) consist of breathtaking landscapes dotted with brightly-clad people pursuing their daily activities. He was especially proud of his award winning canvases of NY’s Central Park and rural scenes in and about Warwick, NY, and neighboring Sussex County, NJ. I paint everything, he used to say, but not abstractions. He preferred his art to be recognizable; it's an amazing experience to watch a painting reveal itself, be it on paper or canvas. He very much enjoyed painting on location and rarely used photographs unless he had taken them himself. For several decades, he was a familiar sight, smoking his cigar and mixing his paints along the local highways and byways. Despite occasionally bad weather, he was known to endure many long hours in snow and ice waiting to capture his subject in just the right light. Insightful Works by Urban Landscapist J. Bye

From an early age, J. Bye he showed a talent for rendering still lives and landscapes. Because visual communication always interested him, he decided to pursue art after graduating high school. His medium is both oils and acrylics, depending on the image, style, and time. He entered the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) for his undergraduate studies, where he discovered his passion for the human figure. he spent a year in Rome, through RISD's European Honors Program where he studied classical art and architecture. After RISD, he continued with his graduate studies at the NY Academy of Figurative Art. His formal education exposed him further to the works of artists like Matisse, Bonnard and Lucian Freud, whose styles influence his work.

Sailing with French artist Yolande Ardissone

Yolande Ardissone left Normandy at 17 to study at the Ecole des Arts Appliques in Paris. Two years later she transferred to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts* and studied in the atelier of Unterstellar. In 1953 she was inducted into the Salon d’Automne. Wally Findlay Galleries began representing Ardissone in 1957, hosting her first one-woman show in the U.S. Ardissone has won numerous awards due to the lively sensitivity of her paintings and her firm and balanced compositions. Her art is painted with a mature technique, forcefully, with textured paint radiating a natural and joyful dynamism. Ardissone's painting have a lot in common with the Fauves. This is understandable, when you see her strongly colored palette, and the spontaneous expression of what she feels with her brush she transmits forcefully. Click for More.

New colorful art by Artist Barbara Krupp is now on display at the Westport River Gallery. “My journey as an artist over the past decade has gathered momentum in ways I never anticipated. Professional recognition – which I have never sought – in the form of increased solo, group and now Museum shows has given me encouragement. I believe my expressive potential has begun to mature. Nature has always been my most fundamental inspiration. Gardens, for example, my own and others’, simple and complex, were behind the organizing principles of my work. Shadow Play Reflects Courchia's New French Art

Jean-Paul Courchia is a highly successful painter both in Europe and America. His oils were displayed in Marseille in the famous Provençal Gallery Jouvène, which Van Gogh and Cezanne called home for their artwork. Her Highness Queen Paola of Belgium, the wife of the Consul of Japan in Marseille, and the president of the National Arts Club in NY, are collectors of his work. Courchia is also a unique speaker, able to explain through a simple approach the way we see art. He is an MD and a renowned artist painter. He splits his life among his office, studio and the dept.ophthalmology where his two passions merge: he works on the relationship between art and the brain by analyzing eye’s movements. Exploring the work of Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro

Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro, also known as Ludovic-Rodo, was Camille Pissarro’s fourth son. In 1894, at the age 16, he published his first wood engravings and by 1898 he was sharing a studio in Montmartre with his bother Georges. The impact of Camille’s art and teaching on Ludovic-Rodo was considerable, but he also closely aligned himself with artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, Maurice de Vlaminick and Raoul Dufy as well as Alfred Sisley. In 1905 he even participated in the Fauve exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants. Like his brother Lucien, Ludovic-Rodo spent a considerable amount of time in London, and many of his paintings are of familiar London landmarks. Click for more pictures by the Pissarro family.

Beautiful Blossoming Art of Diane Monet

Diane Monet’s gardens have blossomed all around the Westport River Gallery, in a variety of shades, sizes and colors. Alexanre Monet -- Diane grandfather -- moved to the United States from Paris in 1887 at the age of 24, working as a chef and sign-painter. He was always proud to note that he was a relative of Claude Monet. She paints all day - sometimes losing herself into the evening - and is often found painting in the dark after the sun sets. Her work is recognized for its vivid colors, luminosity and depth. Her work is done in oil on canvas, and the look that she desires requires the application of many layers, so her work is quite time-intensive. Capturing the Dramatic Power of NYC Bridges

New England born J. Bye captures the elusive complexity many artists miss, from the decaying solo apartment bldg in Brooklyn, to the infrastructure of NYC's Queensboro Bridge, which sees over 180,000 cars day and at which the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises was filmed in part. The power and immensity are captured in a contrasting and beautiful blend of colors, reflection, movement and power. “The development of a work of art is what interests me most as an artist. What this entails is not just painting one interpretation of my subject, but expressing reactions towards it at different periods of time. The painting becomes a record of a journey, revealing layer upon layer of my exploration through spontaneous brushwork. The goal with which I approach a new painting changes often dramatically in the course of the work's creation. New paintings have arrived at the Westport River Gallery from noted master painter Dominique Dorie, a Benezit artist. At age 16 he began working in the Louvre in a conservation capacity as a sculpture restorer. His textured canvases display a unique color sense, his clearly blocked, linear approach bring depth and a quiet strength to a rural landscape, a serene harbor, or a shadowed interior. Dorie is constantly refining his very individual style and broadening his range with a variety of new subjects. He enjoyed the opportunities his location presented him, most especially, the chance to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum. Impressionist Creations by Lelia Pissarro

Shown here are two original oils by famed artist Lelia Pissarro. Lelia has exhibited in many cities in France, as well as in Israel, Switzerland, New York, Boston, and London. Lelia has formed L'Atelier, a group of French artists who meet regularly to work together. For a short time, she also taught painting in Paris. Lelia Pissarro is the fourth generation of a family of artists. Her father is the artist H. Claude Pissarro and her grandfather was Paulemile Pissarro, the youngest son of the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. Leila's early years were spent with her grandparents in Normandy and she exhibited her first painting at age 11 at La jeune peinture in Paris.

The Mysterious Forest Insights by HM Saffer

 

Award winning and unique artist HM Saffer has just sent the Westport River Gallery several new vibrant works on canvas and board. This oil on board is about 16x48, great for hanging over a sofa or mantle. In 1965, he went to Paris to take economics classes, but wound up becoming a musician with Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour. HM Saffer was hired by Barclay Records as a producer and had several hits during the late 1960s During this time he also was chef/owner of two restaurants in Paris and later a third in Ibiza, Spain. Magnificent Spirited, Colorful Art by Caudron

Color and vibrancy from France. Artist Didier Caudron was born in France in 1947, and admits he is fond of Southern France's sunlight. Lover of character homes and out of proportion rooms, former glider pilot, passionate about sailing, gliding as well as reading. He has exhibited his works for two decades. The way the surface is used purifies to the greatest degree the subject, made even more obvious by dismissing any ornament. Such a feeling of the painting, such a magnificent spirit can rarely be seen and the combination of the two render a dazzling result, which makes one, under the spell, forget that is was achieved thanks to extreme rigour. Saffer was born in Philadelphia in 1942. After graduating from Temple Univ. in 1965, he went to Paris to take economics classes, but wound up becoming a musician with Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour. He was hired by Barclay Records as a producer and had several hits during the late 1960s During this time he also was chef/owner of two restaurants in Paris and later a third in Ibiza, Spain. However, all during this era he never stopped painting and exhibiting. He took classes at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and had exhibits in Paris and Brussels before returning to the U.S. in 1970. Powerful and Enchanting California Coastline

Three new California coastline oils are now available at the Westport River Gallery by Nunez, each with powerful waves and enchanting sunsets. Nunez is an artistic painter who enjoys the vibrations of light, shade & color. Color means life and radiant plenitude in his paintings. He usually paints with oils, and sometimes acrylics because they allow him to use thick layers of paint and to leave traces of brush strokes. He likes to paint an unlimited range of topics that reflect his broad interests in art and life. The presence and methodical blending of light and shade are normally the leading factors in his paintings. The fascination of the effects of light on the painting subjects is what brought him to paint. For landscaping, he does a lot of plein air painting. He does smaller paintings in the spot and then works from them if he wants a larger painting. Born in Mexico City, began painting at 13 and he studied Art and Philosophy in Spain, Italy and Mexico.

Graceful French Ballerinas by Michel Guyon

Thse two originals are coming from France by Michel Guyon. Guyon's paintings are a mixture of poetry and movement blended with a strong touch of color from operas, la belle epoque, le cirque, Venice festivals. Michel Guyon has created original works using "The marriage of Figaro," "The Magic Flute," Faust, Carmen and Don Giovanni. His latest series of paintings includes Carnivale and Cabaret scenes. Michel Guyon was born in 1947 in Nantes, France where he still resides. There he studied at the Beaux Art School. Mona's Impressions of Westport's Compo Beach

Mona is a US-born architectural perspectivist, whose work in the 80s and 90s for some of the most noted architectural firms was carried in National Geographic, The New York Times, Washington Post, House & Garden, Progressive Architecture, Architecture in Perspective and Interior Design. Today she creates bright landscapes, translucent woods scenes, rural bovines, and colorful blooming flowers. Known also for her colorful and simple barns from Vermont to the Midwest, Mona’s architectural-inspired training is evident. Sleek lines, swaths of color, and enticing compositions. Her work included many high level competitions, including the Supreme Court in Jerusalem, City Hall in The Hague, NYC Coliseum and Aix-en-Provence in France. Architectural firms with whom she worked included the world-known I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, James Stewart Polshek and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Mona’s passion, and competitive nature, also at the time spilled into her private life where she worked hard and within a few years became the second seeded U.S. female billiard player.

Mediterranean Reflections by E.J. Paprocki

The lovely villages that surround the Mediterranean Sea reflect the beauty of a timeless region. E.J. Paprocki's paintings at the Westport River Gallery evoke the timeless beauty of nature, a witness to the integration of mankind‚ imaginings and natures gifts: a simple brick path, a plain iron gate, sailboats that mirror the contours of the clouds and seas.

During visits to many of the great museums in the US and Europe, E.J. Paprocki was drawn to the familiar genius of the 19th century Impressionists, and he admired Monet, Pissarro and Sisley. His art is collected worldwide.

Through careful study, Paprocki found direction in his own artistic vision. His subject matter evolved from cityscape to the country, the gardens the rural path, distant sailboats, the floral still life. This original oil in Westport is 39x32, excluding frame size. Click for others.

CT-Born American Impressionist Rediscovered

A new upcoming exclusive exhibit at the Westport River Gallery depicts Will Hutchins’ personal vision of his travels throug the Northeast & Italy — from Little Deer Isle to the Venetian Lagoon. Born in 1878, in Colchester, CT, Hutchins was the only child of Charlotte Ann Hills & Rev. William Hutchins. A Yale Divinity grad and eloquent Congregational minister, he was respected as the foremost worldwide authority on the horticulture of the American sweet pea. Hutchins earned his BA at Yale in 1901 and the BFA in 1909, earning Phi Beta Kappa honors and class awards for his high-minded essays on art and spirituality. With a natural appeal to the footlights, he became a lifelong thespian. Acting, directing, and producing stage events, his papers include reams of original plays scripts of moralizing, episodic comedies, tragedies, and even a “medieval comedy." Click for other pictures.

Avenue of the Street Vendors by H. Claude Pissarro is an original Engraving With Aquatint, completed in 1989. Image size is 14x19. It is signed and numbered. They range from $750-$1500. Claude's "Les Rhododendroms" (right) is a ltd edition, hand signed serigraph. Born in an artistic environment, Claude spent his youth with art. Initially taught by his father, he first exhibited his work at 14. Lélia has painted since age 4,having been educated by her grandfather Paulémile and her father. From infancy until 11 she was entrusted to the care of her grandparents in Clécy, Suisse Normandy, where her interest in painting was nurtured by her grandfather who taught her the fundamental impressionist and post-impressionist techniques. Monet's Gardens Blossoming in Westport

Monet’s gardens have blossomed all around the Westport River Gallery, in a variety of shades, sizes and colors. Alexanre Monet, Diane Monet's grandfather, moved to the U.S.from Paris in 1887 at age 24, working as a chef and sign-painter. He was always proud to note he was a relative of Claude Monet. She paints all day, sometimes losing herself into the evening, and is often found painting in the dark after the sun sets. Her work is recognized for its vivid colors, luminosity and depth. Her work is done in oil on canvas, and the look she desires requires the application of many layers. But mostly her work is appreciated for its joyous mood and subjects. Click for others.

Graceful Impressions of a French Landscape

The peaceful French countryside, accented by stone buildings, light clouds, reflecting buildings, gracefully hanging tree branches and flowing streams is reflected in this Impressionist oil by Garner. This is one of two originals available, both 20x24.

Seascape & Garden from France's JP Dubord

New oils are now available at the Westport River Gallery (Conn) from French Impressionist Jean-Pierre Dubord. He began to paint in 1967 and had his first exhibit in his native city in 1970. His landscapes evoke the moods of the four seasons in a particularly poetic manner. Showing in numerous exhibitions across France, he eventually exhibited in the prestigious Paris Salons: the Salon des Artistes Francais, and the Salon des Independents. Westport's Live French Impressionist ArtTrek

First Annual Impressionist Live ArtTrek was April 26 at the corner of Main Street & Post Road in Westport CT. College participants wore a beret, traditional headwear favored by artists Monet, Pissarro, Picasso & others. The first-of-its-kind event in the region was sponsored by Westport River Gallery. French Artists Offer the Unique Montmartre

Three works are available if you like Montmartre, Paris. One by Dubord (left), Quizet, and a litho by Renoux. A hill that reaches a height of about 130 meters (427 feet), Stairs running up the Montmartre hill in Paris located in the north of Paris, Montmartre has long been known as the citys premier artist's enclave. "Montmartre" is translated to mean "mountain of the martyr" and was  from the martyrdom of Saint Denis - bishop of Paris - who was decapitated on the hill in 250 AD. This hill was settled because, during the 19th century emperor Napoleon gave much of the prime land in the city to his wealthy friends, who were charged with developing it. The original residents were forced to move to Paris's outskirts where they quickly established their own "town" sans the rules and regulations of the city. That's part of the reason Montmartre became a popular drinking area, and by the late 18th century, along with the liquor came places that were less than reputable, like Moulin Rouge and Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat). Gentle French Classic Art by Pascal Dabere

French artist Pascal Dabere is the recipient of countless awards for his extraordinary talent, five Gold Medals from France and one from London for his oil paintings and Gold Medals for his work with pastels. His honorable mentions are many and stem from all over the world. Dabere is in numerous private collections and exhibits continuously, in Holland, Belgium, Britain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Canada. Born in 1956 at Saint Jeoire in Faucigny he studied painting at Ville de Paris, on rue Lepic. He is a master of trompe l’oeil, still life and landscapes, which are filled with his enchanting clouds.

Four Generations of Available Pissarro Art

Camille Pissarro was the Impressionists' father figure. A decade or so older than most members of the movement, Pissarro contributed to all eight Impressionist exhibitions (from 1874 to 1886) and brought into the group three of its biggest stars: Paul Cezanne (1839-1906), Paul Gaugiun (1848-1903), and Georges Seurat (1859-1891). Pissarro's legacy continues through his offspring. Several Pissarro children and grandchildren became artists or arts professionals. Today, the artist Lélia Pissarro lives in London. Joachim Pissarro is an art history professor at Hunter College in New York. While head curator of drawing and painting at the Museum of Modern Art, he organized Pioneering Modern Painting: Pissarro and Cézanne in 2005. Chillington's Plein Air Landscape Paintings

Landscape and still-life painter Chillington enjoys the diversity of nature. His plein air paintings explore the ever-changing environment. Layering oil paint thickly on the canvas with his palette knife, he records his perception and experience of a scene. Chillington has studied art at UConn, Silvermine School of Art and the Carving Studio (West Rutland, VT). "I was first inspired to paint after a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Impressionist galleries. Old World Impressionist Works by Stuart

Award winning New England native and artist D. Stuart is comfortable with many styles, and at the Westport River Gallery his impressionist style is reflective of his admiration of turn of the century masters. This body of artwork shows his oil painting approach to Italian and French Landscape in an old school impressionist manner. He is a grad of the Paier School of Art in 1975 Conn. with prior studies at Ringling School of Art, FL, and the School of Visual Arts, NYC. He started his own studio in 1977 illustrating educational filmstrips, periodicals and books for the commercial market. See others.

Ludovic-Rodo Pissarro, Colleague of Sisley, Dufy

Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro, also known as Ludovic-Rodo, was Camille Pissarro’s fourth son. In 1894, at age 16, he published his first wood engravings and by 1898 was sharing a studio in Montmartre with his bother Georges. The impact of Camille’s art and teaching on Ludovic was considerable, but he also closely aligned himself with artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, Maurice de Vlaminick and Raoul Dufy and Alfred Sisley. Rodo is remembered for cataloging his father’s ouvre, which took him more than twenty years and resulted in the 1939 publication that is  a standard text on Camille Pissarro. He told brother Lucien the catalog was a fascinating task which revealed, “the work of the artist, its highs and lows, its progress as a whole through acquired experience.” Westport River Gallery has about 6 of his works.

Central Park, the Jewel of New York City

Artist Wayne Shilson's latest works are of New York City's famed Central Park. At the a garden near the Conservatory, and at right the Boathouse area. He uses the time-consuming style of pointillism, the same painting style as George Seurat and Paul Signac. Shilson paints in acrylics, using tiny dots to bring an image alive. The award-winning artist, listed in International Biographical Centre Cambridge England, was named among the 2,000 Outstanding Artists and Designers of the 20th Century, and Who's Who in American Art. He was awarded an arts grant to paint and draw an updated version of the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro's urban landscape series in Paris.  Shown here are two among th series, both 16x20.

Estivalet's Colorful Countryside of France

The enamel-looking oil paintings by Elisabeth Estivalet of Provence reflect the endless & colorful countryside of southern France, impressions of houses, robust trees and gardens. Provence’s rolling farmlands, sun-drenched coasts and looming valleys have always been a source of inspiration to the great painters of history, including Elisabeth Estivalet. Lecomte's Unique View of Brittany, Provence

Bold, bright colors and compositions from France. Most are oils, some are multimedia. All are creatve and unique. Lecomte was born in 1960 in Rennes, France. After studying visual art, Lecomte began focusing her interests on the art of watercolor. She developed a unique technique, creating soft and colorful works featuring her native Brittany.
