Westport's Live French Impressionist ArtTrek

First Annual Impressionist Live ArtTrek was April 26 at the corner of Main Street & Post Road in Westport CT. College participants wore a beret, traditional headwear favored by artists Monet, Pissarro, Picasso & others. The first-of-its-kind event in the region was sponsored by Westport River Gallery. French Artists Offer the Unique Montmartre

Three works are available if you like Montmartre, Paris. One by Dubord (left), Quizet, and a litho by Renoux. A hill that reaches a height of about 130 meters (427 feet), Stairs running up the Montmartre hill in Paris located in the north of Paris, Montmartre has long been known as the citys premier artist's enclave. "Montmartre" is translated to mean "mountain of the martyr" and was  from the martyrdom of Saint Denis - bishop of Paris - who was decapitated on the hill in 250 AD. This hill was settled because, during the 19th century emperor Napoleon gave much of the prime land in the city to his wealthy friends, who were charged with developing it. The original residents were forced to move to Paris's outskirts where they quickly established their own "town" sans the rules and regulations of the city. That's part of the reason Montmartre became a popular drinking area, and by the late 18th century, along with the liquor came places that were less than reputable, like Moulin Rouge and Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat). Gentle French Classic Art by Pascal Dabere

French artist Pascal Dabere is the recipient of countless awards for his extraordinary talent, five Gold Medals from France and one from London for his oil paintings and Gold Medals for his work with pastels. His honorable mentions are many and stem from all over the world. Dabere is in numerous private collections and exhibits continuously, in Holland, Belgium, Britain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Canada. Born in 1956 at Saint Jeoire in Faucigny he studied painting at Ville de Paris, on rue Lepic. He is a master of trompe l’oeil, still life and landscapes, which are filled with his enchanting clouds.

Four Generations of Available Pissarro Art

Camille Pissarro was the Impressionists' father figure. A decade or so older than most members of the movement, Pissarro contributed to all eight Impressionist exhibitions (from 1874 to 1886) and brought into the group three of its biggest stars: Paul Cezanne (1839-1906), Paul Gaugiun (1848-1903), and Georges Seurat (1859-1891). Pissarro's legacy continues through his offspring. Several Pissarro children and grandchildren became artists or arts professionals. Today, the artist Lélia Pissarro lives in London. Joachim Pissarro is an art history professor at Hunter College in New York. While head curator of drawing and painting at the Museum of Modern Art, he organized Pioneering Modern Painting: Pissarro and Cézanne in 2005. Ludovic-Rodo Pissarro, Colleague of Sisley, Dufy

Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro, also known as Ludovic-Rodo, was Camille Pissarro’s fourth son. In 1894, at age 16, he published his first wood engravings and by 1898 was sharing a studio in Montmartre with his bother Georges. The impact of Camille’s art and teaching on Ludovic was considerable, but he also closely aligned himself with artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, Maurice de Vlaminick and Raoul Dufy and Alfred Sisley. Rodo is remembered for cataloging his father’s ouvre, which took him more than twenty years and resulted in the 1939 publication that is  a standard text on Camille Pissarro. He told brother Lucien the catalog was a fascinating task which revealed, “the work of the artist, its highs and lows, its progress as a whole through acquired experience.” Westport River Gallery has about 6 of his works.

Estivalet's Colorful Countryside of France

The enamel-looking oil paintings by Elisabeth Estivalet of Provence reflect the endless & colorful countryside of southern France, impressions of houses, robust trees and gardens. Provence’s rolling farmlands, sun-drenched coasts and looming valleys have always been a source of inspiration to the great painters of history, including Elisabeth Estivalet. A native of Poland, she fell in love with Provence when she settled in the late 1970’s. Click to see others.

Lecomte's Unique View of Brittany, Provence

Bold, bright colors and compositions from France. Most are oils, some are multimedia. All are creatve and unique. Lecomte was born in 1960 in Rennes, France. After studying visual art, Lecomte began focusing her interests on the art of watercolor. She developed a unique technique, creating soft and colorful works featuring her native Brittany. Later, when she began painting in oil, vibrant images of Provence and Africa became the primary subjects of her work. At left is 24x24; right, 28x28. 'Young Beauty' by French Artist Paul Prosper Tillier

This lovely original oil painting by a French artist Tillier reflects the soft, Renoir-like approach to beauty. From her sweet almost cherubic cheeks and soft luminescent gaze, to her curled auburn hair, gold hoop earrings, soft pink lipstick, the hat on top of finely curled hair, and red and white flowers highlighting her slightly tilted hat, she is stunning. She has a white scarf that frames her jacket and highlights her face. The "Young Beauty" is oil on canvas, by French artist Paul Prosper Tillier, who was born about 180 years in 1834 and died in 1915, almost 100 years ago. The picture is signed in the lower right area, and the image is 16x13, excluding frame size. Westport River Gallery has many modern French artists, including Camille Pissarro and his descendants.

 

Pissarro's New Art: Haystacks & Normandy

Shown here are two new original oils by famed artist Lelia Pissarro. Lelia has exhibited in many cities in France, as well as in Israel, Switzerland, New York, Boston, and London. Lelia has formed L'Atelier, a group of French artists who meet regularly to work together. For a short time, she also taught painting in Paris. Lelia Pissarro is the fourth generation of a family of artists. Her father is the artist H. Claude Pissarro and her grandfather was Paulemile Pissarro, the youngest son of the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. Leila’s early years were spent with her grandparents in Normandy and she exhibited her first painting at the age of eleven at La Jeune Peinture in Paris. She studied with her grandfather and her father and later went to art school in Tours. The legacy continues through Lelia whose oils and pastels show the richness of texture and brightness of color so typical of the Pissarro tradition. More info.

Montmartre by Alphonse Quizet, Utrillo Teacher

Shown here is "Street in Montmartre" by Alphonse Leon Quizet, who was born in Paris in 1885, and passed away in 1955. He became an important member of the school of Montmartre spending his life from infancy to old age on the hill of Montmartre, painting in the streets below the Sacre Coeur. This picture is 8.75x13, excluding frame. The Fauves, Nabis, Post- Impressionists, Cubists, Surrealists drew their inspiration from the school of Montmartre. Maurice Utrillo became his protégé (their paintings were similar and sometimes mistaken for each other). His works were exhibited at the Salon des Independants, the Salon Paris Moderne and the Salon des Tuilleries (1907-55). His work is in the collections of the Musee Nationale d’Art Moderne, the Petit Palais (restrospective in 1976), the Musee des Beaux- Arts and the Musee du Luxembourg. French Port Highlighted by J. P. Dubord

La Fete Dans Le Port is the newest original oil painting by Jean Pierre Dubord, born in 1949. His works make people smile, make you feel you want to join the people bustling around France. His work s light-hearted, unique, interesting, and full of life. His colors are pleasing, and add a touch of sometimes whimsy to your own life. The Benezit-listed French artist's work is collected worldwide. Jean Pierre Dubord was born in Rouen, France. Although the city remains his favorite subject, he often paints the street scenes of Paris, the Normandy countryside, the beaches of Deauville and the vistas along the Seine. He infuses his work with the subtleties of light and color unique to each season and locale. A multitude of first place and gold medal awards have been won by Jean Pierre Dubord. The new picture is 18x22, excluding frame size. We have about a dozen oils available.

Joy of Paris via the Brushstrokes of the Pessemiers

Blair & Laurie Pessemier are fine art painters, with a love for Paris. Today we have new works, including the two shown here. They travel to Conn., down to N. Carolina, and other U.S. venues. Their focus is Giverny, Monet's Bridge, Luxembourg Gardens, and everyday life: strollers, dog lovers, board game in the park. Sometimes it is a close-up of flowers, or a historical building. Blair's roots are in architecture & design and he's a registered Architect. Laurie has degrees in fine art & art history. They painted in Seattle before moving to Paris. Laurie won the mayor's prize for painting on the Champs Elysees in 2000. In addition to painting, Blair produces tableware & furniture. Laurie & Blair also offer tours celebrating the art, culture, cuisine of Paris.

Serigraphs by Lelia (4th Generation) Pissarro

Besides the oil paintings, we have several Ltd edition and signed serigraphs by Lelia Pissarro. Lélia has painted since the age of 4, having been educated by her grandfather Paulémile and her father H. Claude Pissarro. From infancy until the age of 11 she was entrusted to the care of her grand-parents, Paulémile and his wife Yvonne, in Clécy, Suisse Normandy, where her interest in drawing and painting was nurtured by her grandfather who taught her the fundamental impressionist and post-impressionist techniques. When she returned to her parents in Paris at 11, the role of teacher was taken over by her father and she subsequently studied at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Lélia moved to London in 1988 and her work has regularly been exhibited in galleries around the world, and following the tradition of her great-grandfather, grandfather and father, More info.

Renoux, Father of Paris School of Urban Realism

  André Renoux was born in Algeria, in 1939, and when he died in Paris in 2002, he was regarded as one of France's national treasures. Westport River Gallery has several limited edition serigraphs, including the two shown here. Click to see all available. The "father" of the Paris School of Urban Realism, the most credentialed Urban Realist (and one of the most respected in Europe), Renoux was known as the peintre-poete (painter-poet) for the beauty of his images. At home in many cities, he made Paris his own, capturing its sounds, smells, tastes, textures. Rue St. Victor (at right) is a dizzying view down the steps of Rue Utrillo, 12×10; At left is Le Bar de l'Artiste Assoiffé. "The bar of the thirsty artist." This cafe/bar remains a meeting place for art students of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the historic district of St. Germain des Pres. On the banks of the Seine artists have gathered for centuries to enjoy cuisine and the ambiance of gas lamps and shimmering water. 16×12.

Imprisoning Light by France's J.P. Dubord

French master artist John-Pierre Dubord has an original approach to painting: his choice of palette colors is rich in its tones,fresh and uplifting; his canvases reveal an intense joy of life; and his love of the rhythms of nature are interpreted with nuances of color. Jean Pierre Dubord has mastered the art of imprisoning light on canvas. The delicate poetic strain in his paintings has been influenced by the Impressionists. There is a very personal touch as well, however, for as one critic remarked, "Dubord is guided solely by his heart and emotions." Westport River Gallery in Westport  is pleased to offer his new works.

Homage to Red by French Artist Caudron

New paintings are soon on the way from France to the Westport River Gallery. Caudron was born in France in 1947, and admits he is fond of France's sunlight. Lover of character homes and out of proportion rooms, former glider pilot, passionate about sailing, gliding as well as reading. He has exhibited his works for two decades. The way the surface is used purifies to the greatest degree the subject, made even more obvious by dismissing any ornament. Such a feeling of the painting, such a magnificent spirit can rarely be seen and the combination of the two render a dazzling result, which makes one, under the spell, forget that is was achieved thanks to extreme rigour. Tron: 'I Prefer a World of Warmth & Happiness'

Two paintings remain by Tron, both 13x16. Born in 1943 in Champagne sur Oise, France, Jean Claude Tron began to paint at the age of thirteen. At sixteen he started work, but his desire to paint was so strong that he continued his art studies through evening classes. Despite fulfilling numerous commissions and holding exhibitions of his work at prestigious galleries, Jean Claude did not begin to dedicate all his energies to painting until 1990. Since then he has seen his reputation grow steadily throughout Europe and the United States, where his work is in constant demand and his originals sell for commanding prices. "I do not paint formal landscapes that represent a particular place which then binds us. I prefer a different world, a world that radiates warmth and happiness, leaving space to dream."

Daring Perspectives by French Artist Dr. Caudron

The mind's eye of a doctor and pilot...images from the sky. Dr. Caudron's (French diabetes physician) paintings are based on a perfect match between the diverse structures of motifs - through skies forcefully crushed to grounds which offer surprising perspectives - and, while the artist is wandering on the chromatic scale with enthralling boldness, there is nothing he dares not do. Such balance in his works allows the eye to travel on the painted surface and trace the detail of some knife-shaped pattern. Such a feeling of the painting, such a magnificent spirit can rarely be seen and the combination of the two render a dazzling result, which makes one, under the spell, forget that is was achieved. Original Le Pont de Vey by Paulemile Pissarro

A new addition to the gallery is entitled Le Pont de Vey by Paulemile Pissarro (1884-1972). Paulemile was the fifth & youngest son of Camille Pissarro, born in Eragny close to Giverny, home of his father's closest friend, Claude Monet. He was 19 when his father died. As he grew older, it was to Monet that Paulemile gravitated, adopting him as a father figure, teacher, friend. And it was Monet, as much or more than his father, who was to influence his art as the youngest Pissarro yearned to follow in his father's footsteps. He & his second wife bought a home near Clecy on the Orne River in the area of hills & valleys known as Swiss Normandy. There they raised three children: two sons & a daughter. His oldest son, H. Claude also became a painter. In 1967, Paulemile had his first one-man show in the US at Wally Findlay Galleries in NY, which led to wide recognition & success in this country.

Window into the French World by Dr. Courchia

French artist Jean-Paul Courchia just sent this unique composition, a window into a landscape and seascape. The physician-lecturer-artist’s oil paintings on canvas are displayed in Marseille in the famous Provencal Gallery Jouvène, which Van Gogh and Cezanne called home for their art work. Her Highness Queen Paola of Belgium and Madame Nobutaka Shinomiya, wife of the Consul of Japan in Marseille, are avid collectors of his work. He is also a medical doctor of endocrinology and metabolic diseases, and fascinated by science, art, medicine, perceptions, and light. He works with the department of ophthalmology in Saint-Joseph’s hospital in Marseille. See the Whisper Video.

Land-Seascape by Georges Yoldjoglou

Original oil by a heavily decorated French artist? One available, 21x25, (not incl. frame), by internationally known Georges Yoldjoglou. "Yold"  was born in Paris June 25, 1933. His work is colorful, light, flowing, almost wistful in its approach. His skies are dramatic, and land is full of life. 1956-90 he was artistic director at TOTAL, France Designer of stamps and posters. Other distinctions: 1992 - Laureat of the French government competition for the design of coins; 1993 - Winner of the Best Crown coin design, Winter Sport, Baltimore, USA; 1996 - Illustrated colette´s art book "Belles Saisons" with original colored lithographies edited by Pierre de Tartas, Paris; 1996 - Laureat of the French State Competition for the design of a symbolic motive for aircraft-carrier "Charles de Gaulle"; 2004 - Promoted by the French government to the rank of Chevalier dans l´Ordre des Arts & Letters.

La Roche-Gouyon by Camille Pissarro, 1859

Known as the "Father of Impressionism," Camille Pissarro painted rural and urban French life, particularly landscapes in and around Pontoise, as well as scenes from Montmartre. His mature work displays an empathy for peasants and laborers, and sometimes evidences his radical political leanings. He was a mentor to Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin and his example inspired many younger artists, including Californian Impressionist Lucy Bacon. Pissarro's influence on his fellow Impressionists is probably still underestimated; not only did he offer substantial contributions to Impressionist theory, but he also managed to remain on friendly, mutually respectful terms with such difficult personalities as Edgar Degas, Cezanne and Gauguin. Pissarro exhibited at all eight of the Impressionist exhibitions. Shown here with the initals 'C.P.' Vilcaz: Elegant Colors, Movements & Textures

Abstract boats, poppy fields and colorful canvasses. French Artist Vilcaz creates colorful, vibrant, and dynamic imagery resulting in unique masterpieces. Working in the Batch and Garonne regions of France, Vilcaz is inspired by her colorful, artistic surroundings. Her works on canvas reflect her perspective on the essence of nature. Her interpretation displays what is not defined or detailed, while her concentration on matter and texture bring forth the images. Her beautiful impressionist abstractions reveal an extraordinary flow of elegant colors, movements, and textures. Vilcaz’s use of blue, red, yellow and greens, and rhythm are suggestions of form. Mom Discouraged Paulemile Pissarro from Art

Paulémile Pissarro, Camille Pissarro's youngest son, was born in Eragny in 1884. He was brought up in the artistic environment of the family home there and, encouraged by his father, he began drawing at an early age. Paulémile's godfather was Claude Monet who became his teacher and close friend, particularly after Camille's death in 1903. Although his father supported his desire to be an artist, his mother was eager for him to learn a more practical trade. In 1908, he put aside his artistic pursuits and worked as an automobile mechanic and test-driver, and then as a lace and textile designer, thus allowing him a little time to paint. While Paulémile was still working at the lace factory his brother Lucien, who lived in London, asked him to send over some watercolors, and the sale of these encouraged Paulémile to leave the factory and dedicate himself to painting. By the 1920s, Paulémile had become an established Post Impressionist artist, sharing a studio with Kees Van Dongen and spending the summer months escaping from Paris with him and Maurice de Vlaminck. In 1924, he moved to Lyons-la-Foret, a small town near Eragny, where he painted his surroundings, returning again and again to the placid waters of the River Epte winding its way among willows, meadows and hills. One serigraph left from Hugues Claude Pissarro, father of lelia Pissaro, grandson of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and son of Paulemile Pissarro. "Les Rhododendroms" is a limited edition (425 made), hand signd serigraph. Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine and enveloped in an artistic environment, H. Claude Pissarro spent his childhood and youth with art. Carrying on a family tradition established by Camille Pissarro, his father frequently took Hugues on painting excursions, accompanied by his artist friends, and these proved formative for him. Initially taught by his father, Pissarro first exhibited his work at 14. He subsequently studied art in Paris at prestigious establishments such as Ecole du Musée du Louvre. His daughter is Lelia Pissarro.

Lighthouses & Poppy Fields by Dominique Dorie

If you've had an interest in smaller works by noted French Impressionist Dominique Dorie, stop in. Six new works have landed, including the two shown here. Dominique Dorié was born in Versailles in 1958. At sixteen he worked in the Louvre as a restorer of sculptures. Dominique Dorie enjoyed the opportunities his location presented him, most especially, the chance to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum. He had several small “exhibitions” of his own, by hanging his work in the evenings on the fences of the Church of St. Germain des Pres.

Poumelin's Expression of Poetic Elements

French artist Richard Poumelin's art is expressed in his music as an accomplished guitarist. His landscapes, Venetian seascapes, still lifes, and his others are filled with a spiritual exercise. His works evoke a feeling, a sense of place, and sometimes the gold paint jumps out against the serene black and white. A silver medallist in 1996 at the Grand Salon Internationnal de Peinture, and the grand prize gold medalist in 1997 at the Internationnal d’Arts Plastiques Poumelin’s work are in a number of significant private and corporate collections. Camille Pissarro's Son, Claude Monet's Godson

Paulémile Pissarro, Camille's youngest son, was born in Eragny in 1884. Today, Westport River Gallery has a number of his works available. At left is a pencil drawing; at right is an oil painting. He was bought up in the artistic environment of the family home there and, encouraged by his father, began drawing at an early age. Paulémile's godfather was Claude Monet who became his teacher and close friend, especially after Camille's death in 1903. In 1905, Paulémile exhibited at the  Salon des Independants, showing an impressionist landscape entitled Bords de l'Epte á Eragny, and although his father had supported his desire to be an artist, his mother was eager for him to learn a more practical trade. In 1908, he put aside his artistic pursuits and worked as an auto mechanic and test-driver, and then as a lace & textile designer, thus allowing him a little time to paint. While Paulémile was still working at the lace factory his brother Lucien, who lived in London, asked him to send over some watercolors, and the sale of these encouraged Paulémile to leave the factory and dedicate himself to painting. In 1967, he had his first one-man show in the U.S. at Wally Findlay Galleries in NY. This led to recognition and a degree of professional success few Pissarro artists had known during their lifetime. Since his death in 1972, Paulémile's paintings have been exhibited around the world.

France's Mo Gart Delights with Modern Florals

New original oil paintings at the Westport River Gallery include fresh creative works with a modern twist by noted French artist Mo Gart. Mo Gart is a multiple gold-medal winner in France for her mastery of light, landscapes & seascapes. She is known for a variety of works, from flowing waers with birds and boats, to timeless landscapes, and mood pieces with colorful backgrounds. Her new works include unique florals with a cubist slant, complete with shades of red, yellow, pale blues, greens and pinks. The new works are 20x24, with one larger piece, with sunflowers. Jean Pierre Dubord's Nuances of Color & Form

French Impressionist Jean Pierre Dubord has a palette rich in it’s uplifting tones. His work is so highly regarded that he has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. Dubord’s canvases reveal his own intense joy of life and his love of rhythms of nature are distinguished by a nuance use of colors, form and movement. The artist’s mastery of his secrets of imprisoning light on canvas and the very delicate poetic strain in his painting may be traced to the impressionist manner, but it bears a very personal touch as well. One critic remarked Dubord is guided solely by his heart and emotions. Huchet, Zarou French Lithographs Available

A variety of lithographs have come in to the Westport River Gallery from French artists including Urbain Huchet and Victor Zarou. Huchet was born in Rennes, France in 1930. After studying law and owning a textile factory for years, he decided in 1960 to devote himself to painting. He spent his first three years as an artist in Port-Aven, following in the footsteps of Gaugin and Emile Bernard, both of whom influenced him. Huchet is a master of Contemporary Impressionism. His paintings and lithos celebrate a wide spectrum of life ranging from delightful vignettes of the Parisian scene to the inspired beauty of dramatic seascapes and the French countryside. Many of his paintings express his love of the sea and the Brittany coast. After moving to Paris in 1963, his love of adventure and travel led him to spend time painting and writing in Europe, the Middle East and South America where he produced marvelous imagery capturing the essence of the lands and people. He made 14 trips of more than 4 months each, from Mexico to Brazil, via Peru, Central America and the Caribbean islands. A luxurious portfolio of lithos of Egypt shows his love of that country. His wonderful depictions of circus performers, musicians and everyday people were strongly influenced by his adventures and sojourns in foreign lands. Exhibitions of his work have been held throughout he world. Paris, however, is where the largest number of his works were produced. At least 300 editions of lithographs have been printed of his works, all produced by the artist himself in workshops in Paris and Cannes. Click to see them all.

Estivalet delights with Provence landscapes

New works have arrived by master artist Elisabeth Estivalet, who is collected worldwide. Provence 's rolling farmlands, sun-drenched coasts and looming valleys have always been a source of inspiration to the great painters. Originally a native of Poland Elisabeth Estivalet fell in love with Provence when she settled there in the late 1970's. Though Estivalet holds degrees in both Economics and Philosophy, the countryside of Provence elicited from her a natural artistic talent, and she instinctively embarked on a passionate and lifelong career as an artist. Painting solely with a palette knife, Elisabeth Estivalet taught herself to master the techniques of color management, perspective and composition. Focus on Fairfield by Lapetit

A variety of new works by Henri Lapetit of Fairfield, Connecticut has arrived and is not even framed yet. Art has always had a dominant place in his life and this natural talent means that from the early age of 16 he paid for many of his world trips by painting and selling his works en route. With no formal art education he has always had to rely on the public at large to be his severest critic. He paints Westport, Southport, Paris, Saint Tropez and Southern France. Several of his works are also on display at th Villa Gourmet in downtown Milford, Connecticut.

Bold Landscapes by Jean Claude Tron

Born in 1943 in Champagne sur Oise, France, Jean Claude Tron began to paint at the age of 13 At 16 he started work, but his desire to paint was so strong that he continued his art studies through evening classes. Despite fulfilling numerous commissions and holding exhibitions of his work at several prestigious galleries, Jean Claude Tron did not begin to dedicate all his energies to painting until 1990. Since then he has seen his reputation grow steadily throughout Europe and the United States, where his work is in constant demand and his originals sell for commanding prices. Colorful works by Michel Ferran

Born in 1943 close to Narbonne, Michel Ferran, photographer and painter since childhood, decided in 1992 to open a workshop and consequently became a professional painter, primarily focusing on the landscapes of Provence. His painting evolved quickly to a purified stylization of the subjects and forms. Working the paste and the colors together, it carved its fabric of a pallet containing blue, ochres, yellows and reds, highlighting the light to create unique effects. His talent was noticed by collectors and publishers. His pictured were then collected across Europe, and the United States, until he passed away in 2003.
