Calming Beauty of Provence by French Artist Dorie

Dominique Dorié was born in Versailles in 1958. At the age of sixteen he began working in the Louvre in a conservation capacity as a restorer of sculptures.Dorie enjoyed the opportunities his location presented him, most especially, the chance to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum. Although Dorié had little free time, he felt compelled to sketch. Nevertheless he had several small “exhibitions” of his own, by hanging his work in the evenings on the fences of the Church of St. Germain des Pres. 1977 marked the turning point for Dorié’s career. He won a scholarship offered by the city of Paris, which enabled Dominique Dorie to enroll in a night course in drawing. As his skills in that field improved, he developed a desire to use color and began to paint in oil. From 1974 on, Dorié had participated in a number of exhibitions in the towns surrounding Paris. He also had two one-man shows in Paris, and  Strasbourg. 

Enjoy the Lavender Fields by S. Guccione

Passion is a vital underpinning of any good artist. Brazilian born S. Guccione went to college and graduated with degrees in journalism and art in Sao Paulo.“At the age of 25 I moved to Rome, where I had the opportunity to meet the most wonderful artists and attend many workshops and classes where I learned to work with different styles and mediums. I learned a lot from my mentor Giorgio Michetti who passed away in 2019 at the age 105. I truly enjoy working with oils, and my favorite style is impressionism. Equestrian is the theme that really brings back wonderful memories of my childhood in Brazil where I rode as well and raised horses.”Her mentor was born in Viareggio, Italy, in 1912. At 17 he had his first exhibit. His works add up more than 2000 paintings which have been exhibited in Italy, Switzerland & Austria. The Italian artist who lived through two wars, one of them as a soldier, also suffered the loss of two wives. He met Pablo Picasso in Nice and has opened his art to other techniques such as painted pants and a car. A man who at his long age has understood that the most important thing is to share knowledge and passion.

Early Art by Noted French Artist Jacques Eitel

French artist Jacques Eitel has a unique, soft style that evokes an enticing, almost Camelot feeling. Edges are soft, colors are soft, and the dreamy landscapes are almost playful. His oils on canvas are  inspired by the lush French landscape, the seaside, and buildings that seem tio have soft edges. Born in Paris in 1926, Eitel studied at L’Ecole de Beaux Arts in the studio of portrait and landscape painter Eugene Narbonne. Jacques Eitel has exhibited regularly throughout Europe and the Unioted States. His work has been included in the prestigious Salon d’Autumne and the Salon des Independants; he had his first solo show at the Galerie Raffy in 1957 and won the Prix de Montmartre. He also goes by the name Jacques Eitelwein. His paintings are in the collections of the French state, the City of Paris, and in numerous private worldwide collections. His work is also in the following museums: Musee de la Marine, Musee Etat Francais in Paris, Musee de St. Cyprien, Musee Chapelle Saint Colomban.

Delightful Seine Original by Kaprielian

Born in France in 1959, Kaprielian has become a Chevalier and an Associated Member of the ART section of the International Academy of Greci-Marino (Italy). He can be classified as a new generation of impressionist painters painting landscapes of the Ile-de-France, Normandy, Brittany and Provence, the riverbanks of Seine through all seasons. His works have been exhibited in respectable galleries in France as well as America. His works became part of the collection of the Royal family of Morocco. He has been painting since 22. He travels throughout the Ile-de-France, Normandy, Brittany, Provence, and the riverbanks of Seine. This original is about 10x20, about 20x30 with ornate frame.

Dramatic Floral by French Artist JP Courchia

Country Houses by Lelia Pissarro

Lelia Pissarro (French, B. 1963), Oil on paper, signed lower right and dated 2005. Presented with a linen fillet. and framed in a carved and antiqued finished wood frame.. 7 1/4"H x 12"W. Framed: 17 1/4"H x 22"W Lelia was born in 1963, and has painted since age four, having been educated by her grandfather, Paulemile and her father, Claude Pissarro. Following an 18 month break from painting one simple image captured her imagination; a photograph taken in the 1950s by her grandfather, Paulemile Pissarro, of two houses on a road under snow in Clecy in Suisse Normandy, where Lelia had spent the first 11 years of her life. Lelia started to paint this scene over and over, exploring the almost endless possibilities of variation in color and light. It was not her intention to paint a series, but this is what it became. In contrast to the Impressionists who were mainly concerned with capturing one subject in changing atmospheres and lights, something that could only be achieved by painting outdoors, she has created all the variations of the one subject in her studio and through her own imagination. For this reason, she is adamant that there should be no unnecessary or pretentious comparison of the work in this exhibition with the many series painted by Monet or her great grandfather, Camille Pissarro.

Seaside Gouache by Paulemile Pissarro

Seaside original by French artist Paulémile Pissarro (1884-1972), Gouache landscape on paper, Matted in a gilt finished frame and glazed. 8 3/4"H x 11 3/4"W; Frame: 17 1/2"H x 20 1/2"W. Paulémile, Camille Pissarro's youngest son, was born in Eragn in 1884. He was bought up in the artistic environment of the family home there and, encouraged by his father, began drawing at an early age. His godfather was Claude Monet who became his teacher and close friend, particularly after Camille's death in 1903. In 1905, he exhibited at the  Salon des Independants  for the first time, showing an impressionist landscape entitled Bords de l'Epte á Eragny, and although his father had supported his desire to be an artist, his mother was eager for him to learn a more practical trade. In 1908, he put aside his artistic pursuits and worked as an automobile mechanic and test-driver, and then as a lace and textile designer, thus allowing him a little time to paint. While he was still working at the lace factory his brother Lucien, who lived in London, asked him to send over some watercolors, and the sale of these encouraged him to leave the factory and dedicate himself to painting.

Theatrical Reflections by France's Michel Guyon

Theatrics of the vibrant genre of entertainment art is embodied by the artistic works of French master artist Michel Guyon. In the late 1960s Guyon studied at the Beaux Art School in Nantes, France. With Guyon’s passion for music, opera and painting, the artist also gained experience in theatrical productions. He began creating theater set décor, costumes and posters. Working with Mr. Baty, Michel discovered the drawings of Paul Dauce and Joel Dabin. Guyon worked with them on theater set décor. In the 1970s, Guyon worked on the set décor of several lyrical spectacles, including Figaro, The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Carmen, Faust, & others. Michel Guyon also worked for the Jean Marais Festival and the Francais Huster Company, “les Treteaux de France” and various summer festivals around France. The artist created scenery for the Angers Opera House and began to paint on canvas. Guyon’s talent of set and costume design permeates his artistic works beautifully. The combination of a poetry of colors and his forceful touch create a unique sense of strength and vibrancy in his paintings.

Westport: Onion Center to Artists' Community

Shown here is a Saugatuck Shores in Westport CT by French artist Mo Gart. Colonists settled along the Saugatuck River as early as 1639. In 1780 George Washington visited the Marvin Tavern in Westport. Westport was officially incorporated as a town in 1835, with land taken from Fairfield, Weston, and Norwalk. For many decades after that, Westport was a prosperous agricultural community and distinguished itself as the nation’s leading onion-growing center. After the turn of the century, Westport gained the reputation as an artist & writers’ colony, and cultural center. It was the home of Norman Rockwell’s Famous Artists School, also the Famous Writers School. Although Westport still retains its cultural roots, the town is no longer an artist’s colony. Dominique Dorie enjoyed the opportunities his location presented him, most especially, the chance to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum. Although Dominique Dorié had little free time, he felt compelled to sketch. Nevertheless he had several small “exhibitions” of his own, by hanging his work in the evenings on the fences of the Church of St. Germain des Pres. 1977 marked the turning point for Dominique Dorié’s career. Though Paris is the center of art in France, working there can be accompanied by many distractions. At the age of twenty-four Dominique Dorie decided he needed surroundings with greater calm and quiet, so Dominique Dorie moved to a small village on the edge of the sea in Normandy where he has worked to improve his handling of both light and color. The artist who hung his work on the fences surrounding the church of St. Germain des Pres has traveled a long distance.

Cafes Bonaparte and Le Petit Zinc by Mizerek

Shown at left is a 12x16 oi painting now available, entitled Eve At Le Petit Zinc by American artist Mizerek. At eright is Cafe Bonaparte. Known for his colorful, luminous seascapes and expressive brushwork, Mizerek paints on site, deriving inspiration from coastal locations as well as harbors throughout the world. A central theme throughout Mizerek’s work is his use of light. In Mizerek’s words, “Light alters the color of all objects and touches those nearby. It sets a mood and evokes emotion, which I strive to portray in my work. I often explore various methods to interpret the way I view nature. I prefer marine subjects because I enjoy the way water reflects the floating objects, as well as the sky and time of day. It mirrors shapes and intensifies light. I paint outdoors to capture the light first hand and bring out all its color and luminosity.” In 2016, one of Mizerek’s paintings was purchased by the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. In 2007, 2011, and 2016, Mizerek was chosen as Artist in Residence at the Museum Yvonne Jean-Haffen in Dinan, France, and three paintings were made part of their permanent museum collection. Selected to paint at the Forbes Colorado Ranch, he exhibited and was made part of the permanent collection at the Forbes Museum in New York.

While Rouen is a favorite subject for his paintings, he often depicts Paris, the Norman countryside, the beaches of Deauville and Houlgate, the cliffs of Caux and Etreat and the scenes along the Seine. He is known for his ability to capture the subtleties of light and color unique to each season. In 1970, he had his first exhibition of approximately thirty paintings in Rouen, a show that was highly praised by art critics. In addition to an annual show in Rouen, he as exhibited in Birdhouse, La Hare, La Rochelle, Osaka, and Quebec and in major Salons of Paris.

Woman in Search of Lost Time by Bechard

Madeleine Béchard was born in Quebec in 1928 and passed away in 2016. She taught at the Chanoine-Beaudet Institute in St-Pascal-de-Kamouras, she perfected her skills with the painter Pierre Labrecque de Charlevoix. She continued her training at the Montreal Fine Arts Workshop, and finally with Louis Desaultiers from 1991-96. Madeleine Béchard's works are characterized above all by the originality of the subject. Long, slender shapes insinuating elegant characters are accentuated by a vivid coloration. Her compositions created under the theme "Woman in Search of Lost Time" are particularly appreciated by connoisseurs. In addition to his repertoire, "Women and Music" is scenes where characters and instrumental forms intertwine to configure creative and unique compositions.

Poumelin's Cafe Magots and Cafe Flore in Paris

Fresh art by French artiist Poumelin have arrived at the Westport River Gallery. Both are 32x32 Like its neighbour Le Flore, the Café des Deux Magots has raised its ranks to become a Parisian legend. Situated directly on Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés, it offers an unrestricted view of one of the oldest religious buildings in the capital, the Abbaye de Saint-Germain. Since its creation in 1885, the brasserie has welcomed major artists: Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, André Breton and Simone de Beauvoir. Today, intellectuals, national and international celebrities mingle with tourists in a traditional ambiance and decor (waiters in black and white, red seats, mahogany tables, etc.). The inventor of the concept of a literary cafe, the Café des Deux Magots opens the literary award season every year with the Prix des deux Magots.

Soaring, Inspirational Chromatic Bursts by Neel

Christian Neel was born in Cannes 1960. Fascinated by drawing and painting, he studied at the Decorative Arts in Nice. The brightness of his home region became the basis of his inspiration. As a soaring chromatic, the artist uses bright and dynamic colors that mixes directly onto the canvas using brushes and knives. His black, red, blue and white background brings intensity to his expression. The material grows in an amazing supernatural atmosphere, giving a unique energy to his art, where inventiveness and sense of color harmony bind to the creative power. Combination of figurative and abstractive forms and colors, the painting of Christian Neel is a journey between dream and reality: a springboard for the imagination. Falling in Love with Estivalet's Provence

New original art  from France at the Westport River Gallery. A native of Poland, Elisabeth Estivalet fell in love with the region of Provence when she settled there in the late 1970‚Äôs. Though she holds degrees in both Economics and Philosophy, the countryside of Provence elicited from her a natural artistic talent, and she instinctively embarked on a passionate and lifelong career as an artist. Painting solely with a palette knife, Estivalet taught herself to master the techniques of color management, perspective and composition. Flamingos and Riverside Villages by Estivalet

New art is on the way to the Westport River Gallery from Elisabeth Estivalet in France. A native of Poland, Estivalet fell in love with Provence when she settled there in the late 1970's. Though Estivalet has degrees in both Economics and Philosophy, the countryside of Provence elicited from her a natural artistic talent, and she instinctively embarked on a passionate and lifelong career as an artist. Soft Art Genre of French Gold Medalist Zarou

Several signed lithos are available by Zarou. The well known French artist was born in Gassin (1930), a small village near Saint-Tropez. His childhood was surrounded with French Art Culture. Following the footsteps of his father, he made his first exhibition (and sale) at age 12. His career started with numerous individual exhibitions throughout France, including Cannes, Nice & Lyon. He exhibited in famous art galleries in Geneva, and Stockholm. He has also made illustrations for books. In 1971, the city of Paris awarded Zarou the Silver Medal for his distinguished work, and in 1980 he was honored with the highest award "the Gold Medal of Honor." He is Commander of the French Artists society order. Since 1976, he has the privilege to appear in the two main paintings directories of well known world Artists, the "Benezit" and the "Mayer."

Sailing with French artist Yolande Ardissone

Yolande Ardissone left Normandy at 17 to study at the Ecole des Arts Appliques in Paris. Two years later she transferred to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts* and studied in the atelier of Unterstellar. In 1953 she was inducted into the Salon d’Automne. Wally Findlay Galleries began representing Ardissone in 1957, hosting her first one-woman show in the U.S. Ardissone has won numerous awards due to the lively sensitivity of her paintings and her firm and balanced compositions. Her art is painted with a mature technique, forcefully, with textured paint radiating a natural and joyful dynamism. Ardissone's painting have a lot in common with the Fauves. This is understandable, when you see her strongly colored palette, and the spontaneous expression of what she feels with her brush she transmits forcefully. Click for More.

Exploring the work of Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro

Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro, also known as Ludovic-Rodo, was Camille Pissarro’s fourth son. In 1894, at the age 16, he published his first wood engravings and by 1898 he was sharing a studio in Montmartre with his bother Georges. The impact of Camille’s art and teaching on Ludovic-Rodo was considerable, but he also closely aligned himself with artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, Maurice de Vlaminick and Raoul Dufy as well as Alfred Sisley. In 1905 he even participated in the Fauve exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants. Like his brother Lucien, Ludovic-Rodo spent a considerable amount of time in London, and many of his paintings are of familiar London landmarks. Click for more pictures by the Pissarro family.

He was discovered at the age of 25 in the artistic headquarter of Montmartre, where he had his first exhibit at the prestigious Salon de Paris. Inspired by the Mediterranean, South of France, Corsica & Greece, his enthusiasm is evident in his windswept seascapes and sun-dappled villages. He has received a Silver and Gold Medal from France. His work is included in collections worldwide including Musee d'Art Modern de Bocham and the Grand Palais a Paris. Michel Ferran Original Landscapes & Florals

Shown at right is the newest original on the market by the late Michel Ferran, a French artist. The picture is 29x36. Born in 1943 close to Narbonne, Ferran, photographer and painter since childhood, decided in 1992 to open a workshop and consequently became a professional painter, primarily focusing on the landscapes of Provence. His painting evolved quickly to a purified stylization of the subjects and forms. Working the paste and the colors together, it carved its fabric of a pallet containing blue, ochres, yellows and reds, highlighting the light to create unique effects. His talent was noticed by collectors and publishers. His pictures were then collected across Europe, and the U.S. He passed away in 2003. At left is one additional original available,16x32

Dorie's French Summertime at the Beach

Fresh scenes of Provence in France, and other southern regions. Internationally collected Dominique Dorie captures soft, relaxing scenes. Dominique Dorie Dominique Dorie was born in Versailles in 1958. At the age of sixteen he began working in the Louvre in a conservation capacity as a restorer of sculptures. Dorie's textured canvases display a unique color sense, his clearly blocked, linear approach bring depth and a quiet strength to a rural landscape, a serene harbor, or a shadowed interior. Dorie is constantly refining his very individual style and broadening his range with a variety of new subjects. He enjoyed the opportunities his location presented him, most especially, the chance to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum. JP Dubord's Subtleties of Light and Color

French master artist Jean Pierre Dubord was born in Rouen, France in l949. Although that city remains his favorite subject, he often paints the street scenes of Paris, the Normandy countryside, the beaches of Deauville and the vistas along the Seine. He infuses his work with the subtleties of light and color unique to each season and locale. A multitude of first place and gold medal awards have been won by Jean Pierre Dubord: First Prize of Ville de Canteleu, l982; Gold Medal of Ville de Reuil Malmelson, l985; and the Prize of Conseil General Salon de Pontoise in l985, to name only a few. Hugues Claude Pissarro, father of lelia Pissaro, is the grandson of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro (at left) and son of Paulemile Pissarro. Impressionist Creations by Lelia Pissarro

Shown here are two original oils by famed artist Lelia Pissarro. Lelia has exhibited in many cities in France, as well as in Israel, Switzerland, New York, Boston, and London. Lelia has formed L'Atelier, a group of French artists who meet regularly to work together. For a short time, she also taught painting in Paris. Lelia Pissarro is the fourth generation of a family of artists. Her father is the artist H. Claude Pissarro and her grandfather was Paulemile Pissarro, the youngest son of the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. Leila's early years were spent with her grandparents in Normandy and she exhibited her first painting at age 11 at La jeune peinture in Paris.

Imprisoning Light by French artist JP Dubord

New pictures are on the way by noted French artist JP Dubord. Dubord has his own original approach to paintings. His palette is rich in its tones, and is fresh and uplifting. His work is so highly regarded that he had been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. Dubord’s canvases reveal his own intense joy of life and his love of rhythms of nature are distinguished by a nuance use of color. The artist’s mastery of his secrets of imprisoning light on canvas and the very delicate poetic strain in his painting may be traced to the impressionist manner, but it bears a very personal touch as well. One critic remarked Dubord is guided solely by his heart and emotions.

Magnificent Spirited, Colorful Art by Caudron

Color and vibrancy from France. Artist Didier Caudron was born in France in 1947, and admits he is fond of Southern France's sunlight. Lover of character homes and out of proportion rooms, former glider pilot, passionate about sailing, gliding as well as reading. He has exhibited his works for two decades. The way the surface is used purifies to the greatest degree the subject, made even more obvious by dismissing any ornament. Such a feeling of the painting, such a magnificent spirit can rarely be seen and the combination of the two render a dazzling result, which makes one, under the spell, forget that is was achieved thanks to extreme rigour. Graceful French Ballerinas by Michel Guyon

Thse two originals are coming from France by Michel Guyon. Guyon's paintings are a mixture of poetry and movement blended with a strong touch of color from operas, la belle epoque, le cirque, Venice festivals. Michel Guyon has created original works using "The marriage of Figaro," "The Magic Flute," Faust, Carmen and Don Giovanni. His latest series of paintings includes Carnivale and Cabaret scenes. Michel Guyon was born in 1947 in Nantes, France where he still resides. There he studied at the Beaux Art School. H. Claude & Lelia Pissarro Serigraphs Available

Westport River Gallery has original drawing and oils by the Pissarro family, and also serigraphs by Claude Pissarro, Camille Pissarro's grandson, and several by Lelia Pissarro (Claude's daughter). They range from $750-$1500. Claude's "Les Rhododendroms" (right) is a ltd edition, hand signed serigraph. Born in an artistic environment, Claude spent his youth with art. Initially taught by his father, he first exhibited his work at 14. Lélia has painted since age 4,having been educated by her grandfather Paulémile and her father. From infancy until 11 she was entrusted to the care of her grandparents in Clécy, Suisse Normandy, where her interest in painting was nurtured by her grandfather who taught her the fundamental impressionist and post-impressionist techniques. Happy Birthday Camille Pissarro: June 10, 1830

Jacob-Abraham-Camille Pissarro was born in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, to Abraham Pissarro, a Portuguese Sephardic Jew, and Rachel Manzana-Pomie, from the Dominican Republic. Pissarro lived in St. Thomas until 12, when he went to a Paris boarding school. In 1855, Pissarro left for Paris, where he studied at various academic institutions (including the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Academie Suisse) and under a succession of masters, such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, and Charles-Francois Daubigny. Corot is sometimes considered Pissarro's most important early influence. Monert is the godfather to Camille's youngest son, Paulemile Pissarro.

Monet's Gardens Blossoming in Westport

Monet’s gardens have blossomed all around the Westport River Gallery, in a variety of shades, sizes and colors. Alexanre Monet, Diane Monet's grandfather, moved to the U.S.from Paris in 1887 at age 24, working as a chef and sign-painter. He was always proud to note he was a relative of Claude Monet. She paints all day, sometimes losing herself into the evening, and is often found painting in the dark after the sun sets. Her work is recognized for its vivid colors, luminosity and depth. Her work is done in oil on canvas, and the look she desires requires the application of many layers. But mostly her work is appreciated for its joyous mood and subjects. Click for others.

Graceful Impressions of a French Landscape

The peaceful French countryside, accented by stone buildings, light clouds, reflecting buildings, gracefully hanging tree branches and flowing streams is reflected in this Impressionist oil by Garner. This is one of two originals available, both 20x24.

Seascape & Garden from France's JP Dubord

New oils are now available at the Westport River Gallery (Conn) from French Impressionist Jean-Pierre Dubord. He began to paint in 1967 and had his first exhibit in his native city in 1970. His landscapes evoke the moods of the four seasons in a particularly poetic manner. Showing in numerous exhibitions across France, he eventually exhibited in the prestigious Paris Salons: the Salon des Artistes Francais, and the Salon des Independents. Westport's Live French Impressionist ArtTrek

First Annual Impressionist Live ArtTrek was April 26 at the corner of Main Street & Post Road in Westport CT. College participants wore a beret, traditional headwear favored by artists Monet, Pissarro, Picasso & others. The first-of-its-kind event in the region was sponsored by Westport River Gallery. French Artists Offer the Unique Montmartre

Three works are available if you like Montmartre, Paris. One by Dubord (left), Quizet, and a litho by Renoux. A hill that reaches a height of about 130 meters (427 feet), Stairs running up the Montmartre hill in Paris located in the north of Paris, Montmartre has long been known as the citys premier artist's enclave. "Montmartre" is translated to mean "mountain of the martyr" and was  from the martyrdom of Saint Denis - bishop of Paris - who was decapitated on the hill in 250 AD. This hill was settled because, during the 19th century emperor Napoleon gave much of the prime land in the city to his wealthy friends, who were charged with developing it. The original residents were forced to move to Paris's outskirts where they quickly established their own "town" sans the rules and regulations of the city. That's part of the reason Montmartre became a popular drinking area, and by the late 18th century, along with the liquor came places that were less than reputable, like Moulin Rouge and Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat).
