Dorie: From Lavender Fields to Seascapes

New paintings have arrived at the Westport River Gallery from noted master painter Dominique Dorie, a Benezit artist. At age 16 he began working in the Louvre in a conservation capacity as a sculpture restorer. His textured canvases display a unique color sense, his clearly blocked, linear approach bring depth and a quiet strength to a rural landscape, a serene harbor, or a shadowed interior. Dorie is constantly refining his very individual style and broadening his range with a variety of new subjects. He enjoyed the opportunities his location presented him, most especially, the chance to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum. Gabbert's Frolicking & Lively Bronze Sculptures

The fun and frolicking Bronze sculptures of Jim Gabbert at the Westport River Gallery range from the Flower Girl (right) to The Seven Sisters of the Pleiades. The Sisters is a cluster of blue dwarf stars in the Taurus constellation. The Mayans believed this is where the universe began. Today they are named for the seven daughters of the Atlas and Pleione of Greek/Roman mythology. "My mother said I was always building something out of Tinker Toys or cardboard and scotch tape. Throughout school art classes were easy “A”s for me. However, it was not until college that I realized I had a gift. Early in my junior year one of my professors was frustrated by my lack of progress during a series of life – model drawing sessions.  He handed me a chunk of sculpting wax and said “here, try this." In an amazingly short time I had rendered the female model in near perfect proportion. It was as easy for me as drawing was hard." Each is Bronze with Marble Base. See all statues.

Impressionist Creations by Lelia Pissarro

Shown here are two original oils by famed artist Lelia Pissarro. Lelia has exhibited in many cities in France, as well as in Israel, Switzerland, New York, Boston, and London. Lelia has formed L'Atelier, a group of French artists who meet regularly to work together. For a short time, she also taught painting in Paris. Lelia Pissarro is the fourth generation of a family of artists. Her father is the artist H. Claude Pissarro and her grandfather was Paulemile Pissarro, the youngest son of the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. Leila's early years were spent with her grandparents in Normandy and she exhibited her first painting at age 11 at La jeune peinture in Paris.

Eugenio's Luminous Cityscape Reflections

Cities are exciting places full of sights, sounds and even smells from eateries and pastry shops. Peruvian artist Eugenio paints urban scenes in which the people within the painting seem somewhat blurred compared to the cityscape. His compositions are filled with luminous touches of vivid color that reflect the artists fascination towards city life. Eugenio studied at the Beaux-Arts Superior School of Tacna, where he graduated with high honors in painting. He has also achieved superior studies at l’École des beaux-arts in Lima, Peru. Westport River Gallery has examples of both his more, and less, defined images of cities, including Times Square. Sizes range from 20x24 to 30x40. This picture has been sold.

Exploring the Simplistic, Colorful Ripples by Olaf

Large works have arrived by Canadian Artist Olaf, who uses color, light, and brushwork to achieve visual harmony. He captures the movement of water, as well as the freshness and clarity of sunlight, which seems to glisten on his surfaces. In describing himself as well as other artists of "representational art," he writes: "Each dab is stimulated by the details that I observe; we see what others miss and then make it compelling.  We proudly push and alter the colors to suit our ravenous needs.  We improvise right on the spot."  More works.

The Mysterious Forest Insights by HM Saffer

 

Award winning and unique artist HM Saffer has just sent the Westport River Gallery several new vibrant works on canvas and board. This oil on board is about 16x48, great for hanging over a sofa or mantle. In 1965, he went to Paris to take economics classes, but wound up becoming a musician with Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel and Charles Aznavour. HM Saffer was hired by Barclay Records as a producer and had several hits during the late 1960s During this time he also was chef/owner of two restaurants in Paris and later a third in Ibiza, Spain. Definitely Not Your Traditional Line Dancing

 

Who comes up with a title such as Line Dancing for laundry dancing on the line? Artist Mike Smith. This unique composition is 12x48 and can brighten up any room in home or office (or large yacht) The simplicity of the countryside, combined with earthen colors make the new works by M. Smith very enticing for home and office. Smith was born in South Africa and raised in Zimbabwe, and later moved to Canada in the late 1980s. His career continued as an award winning multinational art director/creative director, until he decided to move out into the country to paint full-time in 2003. Click for others.
