River Gallery. “Sunday Afternoon” by the late British artist Edward Prentis
(1797-1854) is filled with life, color & history. It has intricate details, scenes wuthin scenes, a cat, bird,
floral window, and more. A young woman is reading to rapt
seniors, and the scene is alive with the reading. The picture is signed
lower left & dated 1830.
Relined and conserved, the original painting is in
solid condition, and is 24x20, excluding frame with brass plate with artist
name, date, and name of picture. The 1830s and 40s was when the Industrial
Revolution was transforming Britain from an agricultural society to industrial.
It was a period of social unrest, with the rise of the chartist movement,
demanding more rights for the poor. The First Reform Act in 1832 had extended
the franchise, so more people could vote, but it was really men of
